Ave Caesar, Morituri te Salutant

in #travel9 years ago

Hello Steemians,

Today I will talk about my visit to the Colosseum in Rome, Italy. And I couldn't resist putting a title in Latin. This Latin phrase means "Hail, Caesar, those who are about to die salute you", and is the also the name of a beautiful painting by Jean-Léon Gérôme, depicting gladiators greeting Emperor Vitellius (1).

Visiting the Colosseum was one of my two main reasons for traveling to Rome, the other one being of course visiting the Vatican. I will share with you the pictures I took during my visit there.

The place was actually smaller than I expected it, but still quite impressive. I felt a gloom hanging in the air. I couldn't help thinking how many people died there for the pleasure of the audience, and how many Christians were fed to the hungry beasts.

And that's it for today. I hope you liked my pictures, and that you will follow me to my next post. Have a good day, and we'll speak again soon!
