The beautiful quiet versus the horror

in #travel5 years ago (edited)

I don't like flying. I have written multiple times about this already, but for some reason this topic always seems to come back. Maybe it is because I still drag my ass in a plane so often even though I hate it. (Face your fears...just do it!)

I don't hate everything about flying honestly. When the flight is calm it can be the most beautiful place on earth. Seeing the clouds passing by in all crazy forms of bubblegum land. When it is night, seeing all kinds of villages turned into lighting patterns like they are kids' toys. Watching sunrises with all the colors of the spectrum in there, and also seeing them go again because the plane takes a different route into a new time zone. I am glued to the window with these kinds of moments!

But the other side of it...

The side of taking off and feeling the pressure of you getting pressed into your seat. The movement of the engine, the altitude changes and the most horror. Extreme turbulentie. I can not think of anything worse than that.

So after squeezing some arms to mush on my latest flight and trying to get a hold on my breathing again because more than 2 hours of turbulence straight is just an entire braindown melt for me my conclusion is: I really hate turbulence, even though I am more than well aware of it being harmless in a way that the plane won't crash from it. But still. Mid air and a washing machine style piece of man made metal is just not a good combo. Luckily I only read this article later on which of course tells us that turbulence is harmless, but a mid air drop of 30 meters caused people to smash against the ceiling on a flight from Canada to Australia. Damn I am happy that I didn't see this before I stepped on that plane ;)

But again we survived and the goal was worth the strain so as long as that is the deal, I will still be taking flights until I most likely die from a stress heart attack in a plane in a couple of decades. And then...we look back at the beauty of all of it.
