St Mary in Castro, Dover, UK
Hello Steemians
This Saxon church, built on high ground, around 1000 A.D.
in Dover, UK.
Situated next to a Roman lighthouse from around 140 A.D.
The lighthouse or ( pharos) was a source of spolia, that is
taking materials for another purpose.
This is seen throughout the church, Roman tiles and flint
in the walls.
By 1720 the church was is disrepair and services ceased, and.....
The building was used as a cooperage, then a coal store,
and then in 1820's restorations began, and continued
for decades.
Today it is a thriving church, serving the town as well...
as the military.
