Apart Hotel "Das Kaltenbach" - perfect hotel?

How would you define a great hotel? What are your priorities? Location, the quality of the bed, spa area, available restaurants or friendliness of the staff?

I can't answer those questions in general. Referring to my last post it depends mainly on the purpose of the vacation. Why do a I need a wonderful hotel with various restaurants, if we won't eat at the hotel anyways? I don't need a gym, if I'm outdoors the whole day and exercise anyway. Great if the hotel is located in the city center but I'm on a business trip and work at a the fair grounds for example.

But let's put this thoughts aside and let's imagine "the perfect hotel". It should be a remote location without much noise and traffic around but also close by that you don't have to ride for hours to reach the locations of choice. The room should be spacious with a view and balcony, if possible. A huge king size bed, comfortable carpet, high celings, a comfortable chilling area, a bathroom with a shower and bathtub. A stable and fast internet connection is a must!
Breakfast - I wish for a huge buffet, fresh fruits, a variety of cheese, freshly made egg-based dishes and some sweets. A restaurants with snacks during the day and a tasty dinner menu would be great. And what about a spa area? Yes, please. Sauna, pool and a "chill out" room with cozy lighting, an open chimney and lounge music. Oh boy that's a lot to wish for. But what's even more important is that everything should be clean, decorated with style and the staff is available during the main operating hours, fluently in at least two to three different languages and friendly.

Personally I don't need a gym, a mini bar, room service, an entertainment center, a laundry service, a kids club and on and on and on. Well that might change on your personal needs and if you travel with children of course.

The headline of this post is "Das Kaltenbach" - perfect hotel? When we travel we always look for a good price-performance ratio. As said above it often depends on the kind of vacation you take which hotel to choose. Our friends chose "Das Kaltenbach" hotel and I can definitely say that they did a great job. I have to confess that I wouldn't have choosen this hotel because it's pretty pricy. During a skiing vacation you don't spend a lot of time at the hotel during the daytime to take advantage of the many offerings. BUT this hotel was the bomb and worth every EURO we spend!

A driving service to pick you up from the train station, heated street up the hill to the hotel, awesome traditional architecture, breakfast buffet which was prized with an excellence award, driving service to the gondola in the morning and back in the afternoon, spa area with 4 different types of saunas, indoor and outdoor pool, children's area, two alpacas, a cozy fireplace, beautiful decorated rooms and apartments as well as hall ways and public areas, a high speed internet connection and unbelievable friendly staff. The owners were available most of the days and got in touch with their guests and offered advice which slopes to take during the day and where to have lunch.

This hotel has a unique concept, is well organized, offers many services and cares about their guest. Improvements? Of course small things could always be better. Breakfast starts at 7.30 am, which might be a little late, if you want to be the first one on the slope. The hotel is at the end of the town of Kaltenbach, which is great because it's pretty remote and quiet. It's location on the hill side offers a view above the valley but you look down over two industrial companies. I know you can't change it but that's a tiny negative point.

All in all "Das Kaltenbach" is close to perfect. We'll come back for sure. Maybe even for a summer vacation.
