Skiing in Kaltenbach - Part I

There are different kinds of vacations in my opinion:

• Relaxing vacation: Be as lazy as possible
• Roadtrip: Get in a car and explore the area
• Adventurous / sporty vacation: Be outdoors as much as possible

Of course there are numerous combinations possible. I love to go on a skiing trip, because it's a unique combination in my perspective. Usually you get up early to get the most out of the skiing day as possible. The slopes are still well prepared, the lifts are not as crowded and if you are lucky you can even see the red morning sky above the mountain tops.
During lunch time you can enjoy the sun at a nice little restaurant, if the weather plays in your favor. Some time to relax, let your thoughts wander and refuel your energy for the second part of the skiing day.

We really enjoyed the Kristallhütte. This unique restaurant is also a hotel with a nice spa area. You kind of feel like being in Ibiza. Big lounge chairs and mattresses are available with a perfect view, they serve delicious food and even had a DJ spinning some vinyl one afternoon. Highly recommended!
The Platzlalm is also a really good restaurant with a nice sun terrace, which is available by foot, if you walk from the gondola station uphill for about 20 minutes.

Depending on your fitness level and skills you can hit the slops in the afternoon again. Go down the valley run is often pretty challenging and could even be dangerous. In my opinion it's really really really irresponsible to drink, especially hard liquor, while skiing. You are not only risking an injury of yourself but others, young and old, as well. It's like "Don't drink and drive!". I'm not talking about a Radler or a beer, but about the heavy stuff.

No matter, if you did choose to take the gondola or the valley run down to the valley station, now it's either time to party or go back to the hotel and relax. Right next to the station is the VIP BAR: A typical Aprés Ski Bar, really friendly staff and drunken guests. 150 meters further down the road is the Postalm, a hotel, restaurant and Aprés Ski bar. More party, more people and worth to take a look!

If Aprés Ski is not the right thing for you or if your body needs a little rest, I can definitely recommend choosing a hotel with a spa area. Most people enjoy the sauna. If you go to the sauna two to three times a week, the positive effects on the body include among others a relaxation of the muscles, a lower blood pressure and an improved natural protective skin barrier. Did you know that Finland has a population of 5 million and about 1 million saunas?! Insane.
Maybe there is also a pool, indoor or outdoor, to swim and enjoy the warm water.

We were lucky to stay at Das Kaltenbach and had a perfect stay. But that's the topic for the next post.
