Madrid - Part 2 (A couple in Spain) - tips, suggestions and much more photos!!

Following the last post.

• the cheapest ways to get from the airport to the center of Madrid are by bus or subway. By bus it costs 5 euros and goes straight to the center. By subway costs 1.50 euros. . . plus 3 euros boarding fee (only required at the airport). And depending on where you go, you will have to make 1 or even 2 transfers (carrying your suitcases up and down the stairs in the subway stations).

• in the city’s tourist information office, you get, in addition to the map, a list of the visitation times of the tourist attractions, the price and, most importantly, what attractions are free or have schedules with free entrance.

• In Madrid two companies offer the free-tour, morning and afternoon, in Spanish and English, and the meeting point for both tours is the Plaza del Sol. Look for a yellow or red umbrella. It lasts about three hours. In the end, if you liked it, leave a tip for the guide.

• everyone says in Madrid that if you order a beer, the tapas (typical Madrid snack) are for free. Not really. With the first beer comes a very simple snack (like olives or potato chips). With the second the snack will be a little better elaborated. With the third beer comes the best tapas. Still, tapas are relatively cheap and there is a variety that exceeds hundreds. We ate many tapas. But be careful of famous places. The Mercado de San Miguel is one of them. The tapas appear to be delicious, but the price is exaggerated.

• in some bars, the price of a beer inside the bar, sitting at the counter, is cheaper than sitting at the tables outside. But outside has the fantastic urban landscape of Madrid. So you, and your wallet, decide.
• the Archaeological Museum (Calle de Serrano, 13, Madrid, Spain) is a must see !! Sundays are free all day. Skeletons of hominids, tools of the stone age, tombs of the first people who inhabited Europe, the ivory of a mammoth, you can spend all day there, there is much to see.

• The Temple of Debod (Calle Ferraz, 1, Madrid, Spain) sits in a huge park and is an authentic Egyptian temple that was donated to Spain by the Egyptian government in thanks for the aid received during the construction of the Aswan Dam. That is, something you do not expect to find in a modern city. Sensational!!! And it is allowed to visit its interior. And it's free!!!

Surreal . . .

• the Retiro Park is the main park of the city, with beautiful neoclassical buildings, a huge and beautiful greenhouse, a lake to sail with paddle boats and one of the few statues dedicated to Lucifer in the world (Fountain of the Fallen Angel). Finding it in the immensity of the park is one of the amusements of the place.

• a route that I suggest is to go to the Temple of Debod and then take the Gran Via, an impressive avenue with spectacular buildings (look up and notice the huge sculptures on the buildings), and cross the entire historical center of Madrid to the Retiro Park, on the other side, where is also the the Prado Museum and Archeology Museum. Get up early and have a hectic day, getting to know lots of great places in a single day.

• another delight of Madrid is the churros with chocolate. It's hard to say anything after you taste this delicacy. I'll explain to you how to do it. First close your eyes and isolate yourself from the world. Dip the churros in the chocolate (maybe it is better to do this before closing your eyes). Bite a bit. Feel the creamy texture of the chocolate. Pry your ears to the crispy sound of the churros. And be happy.
  The most famous chocolateria in Madrid is the San Gines. But you do not have to go there. It is full of standard tourists (those who just want to go in the famous or trendy places). We got lost and found Chocolateria Valor (Calle del Postigo de San Martín, 7, Madrid, Spain)

• under the Cathedral of Madrid (Calle de Bailén, 10, 28013 Madrid, Espanha), there is another church. It was an incredible place to visit, the lighting is all special, amid huge columns and absolute silence.

• even if you do not go traveling by train, it is worth a trip to the train station Atocha Cercanias (Plaza Emperador Carlos V). Imposing and gigantic, it has in its interior what no one expects to find in a train station: a tropical garden of forest dimensions. And turtles.

• the time for free visit to the Prado Museum is from 6pm to 8pm. But be prepared for a long queue, so arriving half an hour before is a good idea, even because in two hours you will know very little of the Museum's collection, it's a lot! But if you are not an art lover, that time will be enough for you to be satisfied.

• os meios mais baratos de ir do aeroporto ao centro de Madri são ônibus ou metrô. De ônibus custa 5 euros e vai direto até o centro. De metrô custa 1,50 euros . . . mais 3 euros de taxa de embarque (só existe no aeroporto). E dependendo do lugar onde você irá, terá de fazer 1 ou até 2 baldeações (carregando as malas pelas escadas das estações de metrô).
• na oficina de turismo da cidade, você consegue, além do mapa, uma relação dos horários de visitação das atrações turísticas, o preço e, o mais importante, quais atrações tem horários com entrada gratuita.
• Em Madri duas empresas fazem o free-tour, pela manhã e pela tarde, em espanhol e inglês, e as saídas das duas são da Plaza del Sol. Dura perto de três horas. No final, se gostar, deixe uma gorjeta para o guia.
• todos dizem que em Madri que, se pedir uma cerveja, as tapas (típico petisco de Madri) são de graça. Não é bem assim. Na primeira cerveja virá um petisco bem simples (como azeitonas ou batata chips). Na segunda o petisco será um pouco mais bem elaborado. A partir da terceira cerveja é que virão as melhores tapas. Ainda assim, as tapas são relativamente baratas e há uma variedade que ultrapassa as centenas. Comemos muitas tapas.
• em alguns bares, o preço de uma cerveja para ser bebida dentro do bar, sentado no balcão, é mais barato do que sentar-se nas mesas do lado de fora.
• o Museu de Arqueologia (Calle de Serrano, 13, Madrid, Espanha) é imperdível!! Aos domingos é de graça. Esqueletos de hominídeos, ferramentas da idade da pedra, túmulos dos primeiros povos que habitaram a Europa, o marfim de um mamute, dá pra passar o dia inteiro lá, é muita coisa pra ver.
• O Templo de Debod (Calle Ferraz, 1, Madri, Espanha) fica em um enorme parque e é um autentico templo egípcio que foi doado à Espanha pelo governo egípcio em agradecimento à ajuda recebida durante a construção da represa de Assuã. Ou seja, algo que você não espera encontrar em uma cidade moderna. Sensacional!!! E é permitido visitar seu interior. E é gratuito!!
• o Parque do Retiro é o principal da cidade, com belíssimas construções no estilo neoclássico, uma enorme estufa de ferro, um lago para andar de pedalinho e uma das poucas estátuas dedicadas a Lúcifer no mundo (Fuente del Angel Caído). Encontra-la na imensidão do parque é uma das diversões do lugar.
• um roteiro que eu sugiro é ir até o Templo de Debod e depois seguir pela Gran Via, uma avenida imponente e com prédios espetaculares, e atravessar todo o centro histórico de Madri até o Parque do Retiro, do outro lado, onde também ficam o Museu do Prado e o de Arqueologia.
• outra delícia de Madri é o churros com chocolate. Fica difícil falar qualquer coisa depois que se prova essa iguaria. Vou explicar como fazer.. Em primeiro lugar feche os olhos e isole-se do mundo. Mergulhe o churros no chocolate (talvez seja melhor fazer isso antes de fechar os olhos). Morda um bocado. Sinta a textura cremosa do chocolate. Apure os ouvidos para o som crocante do churros. E seja feliz.
  A chocolateria mais famosa de Madri é a San Gines. Mas você não precisa ir lá. É cheia de turistas-padrão (aqueles que só querem ir nos lugares famosos ou da moda). Nós nos perdemos e encontramos a Chocolateria Valor (Calle del Postigo de San Martín, 7, Madrid, Espanha)
• sob a Catedral de Madrid, há uma outra Catedral. Foi um lugar incrível de se visitar, a iluminação é toda especial, em meio a colunas enormes e um silêncio absoluto.
• mesmo que você não vá viajar de trem, vale a pena uma ida à estação de trem Atocha Cercanias (Plaza Emperador Carlos V). Imponente e gigantesca, ela tem em seu interior o que não se espera encontrar em uma estação de trem: um jardim tropical de dimensões florestais.
• o horário para visitação gratuita ao Museu do Prado é das 6pm às 8pm. Mas prepara-se para uma longa fila, então chegar meia hora antes é uma boa idéia, mesmo porque em duas horas você conhecerá muito pouco do acervo do Museu, é muita coisa mesmo!!! Mas se você não é um amante das artes, esse tempo será o suficiente para que você saia satisfeito de lá.
