Red Flag on the Beach Doesn’t Stop Beach Goers

If you have ever been caught in an undertow, or knocked down by a tremendous wave, then you obey the flag warning system at the beach.

The surf was high yesterday when I crossed the street to watch the waves. I was surprised to find some families with small children getting in the water. That surf was rough.

“The most serious of all beach warning flags, red flags warn swimmers of severe hazards in the water. One red flag means that the surf is high or there are dangerous currents or both. Though you can still swim if there is a red flag, you should use extreme caution and go in the water only if you’re a keen swimmer.”

The reference from USA Today describes the beach warning system if you are not familiar with it. Common sense though says red usually means stop in an international language.

I hope that the families will be safe in any regard. There are far too many drownings associated with Galveston beach. I’m probably just being overly cautious since I fractured my ankle at the beach in Honolulu.

The sound of the wind and the surf is very nice. I’ve got to get a video of the sound. It’s better than a noise machine.
