The Vietnam Museum of Ethnology is situated in the country’s capital Hanoi. This fascinating museum is located on a three and a half acre site 5 miles from the centre of Vietnam’s capital. It is accepted as one of the finest modern museums in all Vietnam and an important Hanoi attraction.

The Vietnam Museum of Ethnology

Vietnam is home to an amazing 54 ethnic minority groups. Together they make up 8 million of Vietnam’s total population of 90 million. The groups are divided into many subgroups. Some of these number just a mere hundred or so members. Vietnam has the richest and most complex ethnic make-up in the entire Southeast Asia region. The larger Ethnic minority groups include the Tay, Thai, H’Mong, Muong, Hoa, Dao and Nung. The Kinh (or Viet) people make up about 88% of the population.

The vast majority of the country’s ethnic minorities are to be found in the hilly regions of Northern and Central Vietnam. They live along the Truong Son mountain range, and in the Central Highlands. Though there are pockets in other areas, such as the Mekong Delta.

The main exhibition building of the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology is in the shape of a Dong Son Drum. These fine metal drums were traditionally manufactured by Dong Son culture in the Red River Delta area of Vietnam. They were made over a three hundred year period and the earliest examples date from about 600 BC. They are one of the culture’s finest examples of metalworking. The exhibition Hall was designed by the architect Ha Duc Linh, one of the Tay ethnic group.

Construction of the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology was started in 1987 and it finally opened its doors to the visiting public on the 12th November 1997. It has proved to be one of the most popular of Hanoi attractions. This is a fascinating look at a living part of Vietnam’s cultural history.
