Hoan Kiem Lake sits in the heart of the Old Quarter in Vietnam’s capital city. This is a focal point for much activity throughout the days in Hanoi. From Early morning people start to flock to the lake to jog, practice Tai Chi and just stroll around. It is a very picturesque spot and a welcome respite from Hanoi’s incessant noise and traffic. At the northern most edge of the lake is a busy roundabout where you’ll find the City View cafe a famous multi-decked cafe that provides great views of the lake and surrounding area.

Hoan Kiem Lake sits on the Eastern edge of Hanoi’s Old Quarter, traditionally the old shopping district and now the most picturesque part of town and where most of the trendy bars and restaurants are found. The lake is a favourite spot for many Hanoians.

The Legend of Hoan Kiem Lake

As with most things in Vietnam, Hoan Kiem Lake has its own legend. It is said that emperor Le Loi was sailing on the lake when a Golden Turtle God called Kim Qui surfaced and asked for his magic sword. The sword was called Heaven’s Will. Le Loi thought that Kim Qui had come to reclaim the sword given to him by the Dragon King earlier. Le Loi renamed the lake to commemorate this event, it was formerly known as Luc Thuy which means simply Green Water. The tower on the island in the lake is called The Turtle Tower after this legend.

Towards the northern shore of the lake is a small island on which is a temple called the Temple of the Jade Emperor. It was erected in the 18th century and the island is connected to the shore by a pretty red wooden bridge. Hoan Kiem Lake was home to a famous rare soft shell turtle, which sadly died at the beginning of 2016.
