TRIP TO BASQUE COUNTRY: BILBAO 2/3steemCreated with Sketch.

in #travel7 years ago (edited)

For this second post about Bilbao, I'd like to focus on three parts of the cultural life of the city and its immediate surroundings.

And first of all, you can't speak of Bilbao without speaking about its football club, the Athletic Club. Founded in 1898, it's the jewel in the sport's crown of a region which is decidely turned towards sports (basketball, hiking, surf, etc.).

It does not have the same international fame as Real Madrid or Barcelona, but it shares with them the particularity of having never been relegated from the first division of Spanish football since the creation of La Liga in 1928. Its new stadium was inaugurated in 2013, it's called San Mames and can host 53000 people.

In order to get that photo, I actually entered (for free) the tavern open to the public on a side of the stadium.

Next, I was amazed to discover right in the city center, the Azkuna Zentroa

It is located in an old wine warehouse of the city, and has been refurbished and redesigned by the architect Philippe Starck to become a multi-purpose cultural center.

You can find in it a library, a gymnasium (with swimming pool!), an exhibition center, etc etc...

It really feels like a gift from the city to its own inhabitants!

And it comes decorated with quirky colourful pilars representing different cultures of the world.

Last, when you are tired of Bilbao (if that's even possible!), you can actually jump into the metro and arrive in 20minutes to the shores of the sea, in the town of Getxo to be more precise. There, you can discover first and foremost the oldest suspended bridge in activity (since 1893) which connects the two sides of the Nervion river.

Really, a sight to behold!

And then, you can keep going and have a stroll along the seaside and discover wonderful villas along the way, this place being the privilege of the rich and famous for a long time.

To be continued, next with an article about the Guggenheim Museum!
