Laufskalavarda & Green Lava Walk - Iceland

in #travel6 years ago (edited)

The weather was gray and rainy, but this was kinda expected and didn't surprise us because this is Iceland for god sakes.
Usually, the Icelandic landscape is mountainous and the road goes up and down up and down. Not this time, we were driving on flat ground on some enormous lava field. The fog was that dense that you couldn't see through it. We were driving somewhere along the south coast and it seemed endless because visibility was about 100 meters. After some time fog mostly cleared.

This post contains 2 places I found on the road while driving, I didn't plan to visit these places at the start.
After the fog was cleared I saw a bunch of stone towers pretty much next to the road. I decided to make a quick stop to see what this place is about. Weather still wasn't great, the wind was strong and rain fell from the side. This resulted in pretty hard conditions to photograph and keeping my camera from getting water damaged. Still, I managed to get some shots.

Basically, every traveler crossing the desert for the first time puts a stone on some of the towers. As they say, this brings good luck on the journey ahead. Of course, I left my stone on one tower there.

After some drive to our final destination that day I saw some sign, sign that usually describes something about someplace, hard braked and turned car around and went to see what is this place. There I realized that there is a walking trail on the rugged lava desert ground. We decided to take this road and take some photos of the place.
To my surprise, the trail was only about 100meters long lol.

Brown/yellowish thing on the rocks is moss. Icelanders really try to preserve it and take it very seriously if people are ruining it. That's why there are tracks and you are not allowed to outside the boundaries.

Just look at this empty lava field.

This is a sneak peek for the next post photographed from this place you saw above. You can get a glimpse where I went next, oh this canyon was surreal to see up close. Stay tuned!
