Dettifoss, The Greastest Volume Waterfall In Europe

in #travel6 years ago (edited)

Today we are going to visit Dettifoss. This is the European biggest waterfall in terms of flow volume. It is located in Northern Iceland. To reach there we had to drive 40km of gravel roads. That wasn't pleasant at all, I thought our camper car is going to fall apart but fortunately, it stayed together. The place was in a middle of nowhere. All that time we drove there along the gravel roads, we saw no houses or civilization. Basically, it's like a desert. Just brown land, rock and no mountains.

And there in a middle of nothing is this amazing waterfall. The Dettifoss waterfall is with the greatest volume of any waterfall in Europe, 500 cubic meters of water per second plunges over the edge. Of course, it depends on the season. In the winter, the water flow is smaller ( still huge ) and in the late spring its the greatest. We were there in the mid-summer and water flow at this time is still very very strong. The waterfall itself is 45 meters high and 100 meters wide.

It's not only the waterfall there. It's also the canyon where water drops, its a special sight on its own.

The weather condition wasn't the best. I don't really like taking pictures in plain gray weather because the result is always a little dull. Didn't have much choice there so I did.

INTERESTING FACT: I heard that if some reason you swam under the waterfall there or jumped down. This crashing water will crush you like a bug in seconds! So don't do it. Imagine a bucket of water falling on you from 45 meters. Now imagine tons of water falling on you every second, ugh... When standing there you could feel a small earthquake under your feet, that's how hard the water hits the bottom there.

I also have something else for you. I got some video clips taken with my camera and I mixed em together. Maybe this will give you more glimpse of the Dettifoss waterfall. Watch in 1080p.

Usually when I write a post about a certain place, I add it to @steemitworldmap. I'm a little surprised that im the only one who has added a post of Dettifoss there.

You can feel the force of the waterfall just from you photos. It would have to be a fool who would jump down there!!

Yep! Only suicidal people maybe.
