Steemfest Blog #7 - Day 3 - part 3 - Padrão dos Descobrimentos
Continued from HERE.
Appetite suppressed, @lenadr, her sister and I decided to take a walk and explore a little more of Lisbon, so we headed for the Padrão dos Descobrimentos (Monument of the Discoveries).
Along the way we saw beautiful architecture in the process of renovation. This is the Jerónimos Monastery.
...and fancier cobbled pavements.
@lenadr and her sister in front of a fountain, the Monument Of The Discoveries in the background. It was at this point that @lenadr brought up a challenge set by @swelker101 during the Shane and Muxxy Show: as Lena is into fitness and weight lifting, Shane challenged Lena to lift me. Seeing somewhere suitable for me to climb on, she succeeded.
Never having ridden anybody's shoulders since I was a child, it wasn't long until I lost my balance. Luckily, I grabbed the wall before I managed to do any damage to myself or Lena.
Tuk tuks were all over the city, used by tourists to get around. This one caught my eye. In the background you can see the Cultural Centre of Belém, where Steemfest was held on day 1.
The Padrão dos Descobrimentos was built between November 1958 and January 1960 to celebrate the Portuguese Age of Discovery during the 15th and 16th centuries.
The square in front of the monument is made up of a 50 meter diameter compass, the center of which depicts a map of the world and Portuguese exploration. This was donated by the South African government.

The statue to the far right depicts Henry the Navigator. The other 32 are historical figures from Portugal's age of discoveries. The late afternoon sun cast a warm glow on the exquisitely carved statues.
In the background you can see the 25 de Abril Bridge straddling the Targus river, with the Cristo Rei statue atop the far bank.
To be continued...
All photos, apart from the sourced one, were taken with my Samsung Galaxy Note 8.
Did you think of me when you took the picture of the flower heart stone? It’s so beautiful 😍
I did, of course. ❤️
I often think of you too! Especially, when I am in need of assistance, drinking a bottle of wine. Where art thou muxxy to share a bottle avec moi?
You know me so well. One day...
Just breathtaking, those photos. My favorite, of course, is the one of you perching on Lena's shoulders.
Nice shots @gmuxx! I miss that city
Thanks. As do I, loved the place.
Lisbon is pretty awesome! Thanks for these photos! I just love to see all those different pictures all the different Steemfest people took. A lot is recognisable and at the same time, everyone brings something you haven't seen yet. Great stuff!
Wow, looks and sounds like you had a great trip. Thanks for sharing and allowing us to enjoy the scenery. I'm glad @lenadr didn't smoke you as you fell 😁. You could have done some real damage to the beautiful tiles.
They need to buy your photos for the tourist! These are some beautiful shots!
Glad neither of you were broken on your first meeting!
