THE BIG APPLE -NEW YORK

in #travel7 years ago (edited)

The Big Apple is a nickname of the city of New York, United States of America, although most New Yorkers do not use it frequently. It became popular in the 1920s thanks to John J. Fitz Gerald, sports journalist for the New York Morning Telegraph. Its current popularity is due to an advertising campaign of the New York Convention and Visitors Bureau.

The building most associated with the city of New York is the skyscraper. New York has 883 buildings of this type, one of the largest concentrations in the world. Surrounded mainly by water, the residential density of the city and the high value of the land in the commercial districts made it appear one of the largest collection of office buildings and residential towers in the world.

New York City is a global link for international trade and business, being one of the nerve centers of the global economy (along with Paris, London and Tokyo.) The city is one of the main financial centers (between the others, we find the Swiss bank UBS with its division Wealth Management Americas), insurers, real estate, media and arts of the United States. Its metropolitan area has a gross metropolitan product (an index similar to GDP but located in an urban area) of 952.6 billion dollars in 2005, the largest regional economy in the United States. The economy of the city accounts for most of the economic activity of the states of New York and New Jersey.

Baseball is the most popular sport among its inhabitants. There have been fourteen World Series disputed between local teams that are usually called the Metro Series. New York is one of the five metropolitan areas in the United States (the others are Chicago, Washington-Baltimore, Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay Area) that has two baseball teams. The two teams that are currently in Major League Baseball are the New York Yankees and the New York Mets, which maintain a rivalry possibly comparable with that between the Yankees and the Boston Red Sox. The Yankees have won 27 titles, while the Mets won twice. The city was also home to the New York Giants (now the San Francisco Giants) and the Brooklyn Dodgers (now known as the Los Angeles Dodgers). Both teams moved to California in 1958. There are also two teams in the minor leagues, the Staten Island Yankees and the Brooklyn Cyclones.
