What to do in São Paulo - Brazil
São Paulo is the largest city in South America. It population is over than 12 million people and if we count the metropolitan area it has more than 20 million. With this size it’s difficult to define a specific culture, since there are people from everywhere living here and many descendants of Europeans, Asian and African.
To illustrate this point São Paulo has the largest Japanese community outside Japan. It’s about 1,8 million Japanese in Brazil and the majority live in São Paulo. Not so far there are many Italians, Spanish, Lebanese, Chinese, Korean and other.
That’s why if you come to São Paulo you’ll find a mixed and heterogenic people.
What to do in São Paulo
The subway map of São Paulo
The best place to see this mix is the Avenida Paulista. This huge avenue is home of companies, commerce, restaurants and museums. On Sundays, the streets are closed to cars, giving more space to people walk, make street performances, ride a bike or a skate.
MASP - The Museum of Art
Liberdade
Of course the Japanese community has it own space in São Paulo: the neighborhood Liberdade in downtown. Everything here is Japanese - the restaurants, the stores, decoration, etc.
Ipiranga
The history says that the Independence claim was given here by the emperor Dom Pedro I in 1822. Nowadays this complex has a huge green area, many monuments and the Museum of Independence (closed. It will open just in 2022). It’s the perfect place to relax.
Parque do Ibirapuera
We can say that Parque do Ibirapuera is the Brazilian “Central Park”. Of course it’s smaller, but it’s a great place to walk, practice sports, watch cultural events, go to museums, see the stars in the planetary… You can spend one day here easily!

Mercado Municipal (Mercadão)
The municipal market in São Paulo is great! There are many stores with fruits, condiments, fishes, meat, cheese, olive oil… everything! It’s one of the best places to visit in São Paulo. The complex was inaugurated in 1933 and has 12,5 thousand square meters!
Note: you HAVE to try the mortadella sandwich and the pastel!

Thanks! Yes, there are many Japanese living here. But the Italian, Spanish and Lebanese community are huge here too.
Dizem que a pizza e o sanduíche de mortadela de sampa é muito bom. Provavelmente provarei ainda esse ano :)
É bom demais, cara. Principalmente a pizza! Prove sim, vai valer a pena!
