Along the Scallop

Scallop is a steep bank of the Sukhona River near the village of Red Field. From Veliky Ustyug this place is in close proximity, literally a couple of kilometers away.
This is the closest place to Veliky Ustyug where the rocks and sediments of the Permian period go outside.

From the height you can see the river Sukhona and the bridge over it.

If you look the other way, you will see the turn of the river.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the coast was bare, without any vegetation. Now at the very top and on the slope there are spruces, pines, birches, and in some places impassable rose hips.

At first it was scary to walk along a steep slope through the snowdrifts and thickets. The height in some places here reaches 50 meters.

And snow is a loose substance that does not allow you to stand firmly on your feet.

Even the trees can not always be kept on such a steep cliff.

Over time, tall spruces and pines fall down.

In the depths of the forest grows a strange curve birch.

From a distance, you can see a wood processing plant in the village Novator.

Further along the forest it became very difficult to move because of the impenetrable thickets of bushes and I had to go down. At first, I crawled along the roots of a pine tree growing on the edge of a cliff, and then, holding onto small bushes and tree branches, I was moving down standing on a steep slope. It turned out not so difficult and scary. Deep snow, on the contrary, played the role of a braking element and I did not fly head over heels down.

Meanwhile, dusk and frost intensified.

Fog began to form on the river.

Turning back, I saw the rising moon from behind Scallop.

But a few minutes ago I was walking there in the woods at the very edge of the cliff.

The fog had become quite thick, the cheeks and nose was pinched by frost and it was hard to breathe.

I need to go back to the city.

The moon still hung some time over the forest and disappeared into the clouds.
