What to do on a rainy day in Bocas del Toro, Panama

in #travel7 years ago (edited)

Dear Steemians,

I hope that you can come visit my neck of the woods some day, because it's stunning. It's a small tropical island in the Caribbean sea, and if you've been following me, you've probably seen some pictures already.

Today's a rainy day in Bocas, which made me think back at a post I once wrote several years ago on this site here. I've updated it for you guys.

Travelers always ask us: will it rain while I am there? , and the answer is YES it most certainly will!

We live in a tropical country, so of course it will rain, and we are thankful for that or else we would live in a desert. Tranquilo amigo, it will probably not rain all day long. During certain months it rains more than others, sometimes only at night or a little in the morning, but probably almost every day of the week.

Now you are probably asking yourself whether you chose the right destination, and if this could spoil your Panama vacation? Not at all! You are not made of sugar, and the rain here is WARM. And if that doesn’t console you, here are some really cool things you can do while it rains, to take fully advantage of your time in Bocas del Toro.

Go surfing!

You will get wet anyways! Also, some of the best waves come when it rains, so there you go - grab your board or rent one at Mono Loco Surf School, and let the fun begin!

Go diving.

Not only will you get wet regardless, but you will not be bothered by rain under water. In fact you can completely forget about the weather, and simply enjoy the marvels of the underwater world. Maybe you will come up and before you know it the sun is out again. The best diveshop in town is Bocas Dive Center

Work out!

Do Yoga at Bocas Yoga Studio, go to the gym to lift some weights or train Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and SCT (Strength and Conditioning) at the Bocas Fight Gym - Nothing is nicer on a rainy day than to get a good workout in to revive the soul and body.

Have a drink!

Enjoy a hot chocolate, an ice cold beer or a cocktail in front of the ocean, and watch nature do it’s thing. It is nice to observe the rain - it is peaceful, and relaxing. Why not do it with a nice beverage surrounded with friends? If you are looking for a great spot to have a drink, and hang out while enjoying nature’s beauty, come to one of my favorites: Bibi’s on the beach on Isla Carenero

Learn Spanish

Take a Spanish course at Habla Ya Spanish Schools. After all, it’s easier to get to know the wonderful people who welcomed you, if you can actually communicate with them.

Volunteer

Go hang out at the elderly home. Give back to the community! Here is your chance to do something good for somebody else and also for yourself! Spending a couple of hours at the elderly home, to hang out with somebody and converse is not difficult. You may find it very rewarding, and highly educational (learning about Panama’s history from a human being who was there when it happened, is a lot less boring than learning from a book )

Read a book!

Any book!

Pamper yourself

Go to the spa and get a massage, a pedicure, or BOTH

Waste your time on social media

I really wanted to leave this out, but I guess most of you will do this anyway - check your email/Facebook/Twitter, or Skype your mom or BFF for hours. But really...please, I am begging you, just as a last resort. Electronics are a true vacation killer!

Now please don't tell me again you don't know what to do when it rains =)

Oh wow it looks lovely! And the eldery community looks nice! :)

Yes it is, @futurethinker =) The elderly there are super friendly, always up for a chat.

Cool post @evecab. It was raining when I was there too, although I've heard it actually rains quite a bit on Bocas.
