León is a small city situated in the mountains of northern Spain. Its approximately 300 kilometres north of Madrid.

The Camino

Foreign tourists generally pass through Leon on foot on the way to Santiago De Compostela in the west but it's worth stopping here for a few days.

The Main Sites

The Cathedral

Like all Spanish cities there are some beautiful historical sites. The main attraction is the Cathedral in the center of the old city. This french influence Cathedral was built over several centuries and is famous for its stained glass.

Leon Cathedral

San Marcos

This beautiful 16th century construction has had many functions over the years. During the civil war it served as a dungeon for republican militia members. It was also a Church and a convent. It's now a Parador, Church and Museum. During the summer season its popular for weddings and tourists.

Convento de San Marcos

San Isidoro

The Basílica de San Isidoro de León is an 11th century church located on the site of an ancient Roman temple. There is also a museum. Inside the church there is a very interesting agricultural calendar mural that is worth checking out.

City Walls

The city walls are not complete but large portions remain enclosing the old city.

Unexpected discoveries

Roman Ruins

Experience the rich history of Spain while having dinner. This unassuming restaurant in the main street is part museum and part archaeological site when you go downstairs for food.

Via Principalis

The food here is great too!!

Casa de los Botines

One of the main pieces of modern architecture in the city, the Casa de los Botines, was designed by Senior Gaudi.

Around León

Most foreign tourists pass through León on the Camino. But a few days in León means you get to explore the countryside. Like many parts of Spain there are beautiful Caves to visit which make a good day out. About 50k from León you can visit the Cave of Valporquero.

Las Médulas

This is the site of an ancient Roman Gold Mine but it's now a national park and UNESCO world heritage site. Spend the day walking through beautiful scenery and learning about a mind boggling feat of Roman engineering. I will be writing a follow up post about this with more photos.
This site is worth visiting the north of Spain for in itself.
