Salamanca, Spain
Its not on many foreign tourist maps but it should be!
Salamanca is a small city in Spain situated approximately 200 kilometres (124 miles) north-west of Madrid and 80 km (50 mi) east of the Portuguese border.
This very Spanish city is an ancient city dating back to before the 3rd centuury BC. Its an open air museum and the old city is a UNESCO heritage site. It has got everything as a tourist destination.
Something for all the family.
Spend hours wandering from site to site, snapping photos and soaking up the atmosphere. Everywhere you look is a picture.
It even makes me look like a good photographer :)Stop for tapas and drinks and be entertained by the Tunas Uni Students who entertain people on the street with songs and music
Get your Caricature drawn by one of the local artists in the main square.Find the Frog, the skull and a few other surprises :)
Plaza Mayor
This is the jewel in the crown of Salamanca. I am not posting a photo here so you can discover it when you visit. It's worth visiting to see this alone.

Must Eat
I would highly recommend trying a traditional Salamanca pastry called Raqueta with some Cafe con leche. Salamanca is also famous for its Cochino or suckling baby pig.
Getting There
Madrid - Salamanca
Salamanca is well served with busses from Madrid Airport. Alternatively you can get a train from one of Madrid's main train stations (Chamartin) to Salamanca. Bus trips take a little over 2.5 hours from Madrid to Salamanca. Train Journeys are similar but you need to enter Madrid via underground first to get the train.
Madrid Airport
Madrid Airport has 4 terminals. Terminal 4 is the newest one and is served by Iberia. The other 3 Terminals are much older and are in a different location than Terminal 4. There is a free shuttle between terminals. Flights from Dublin will arrive at either Terminal 4 (if flying with Iberia) or Terminal 1 (Aerlingus or Ryanair). Salamanca is well served with busses from all Terminals.
Train Madrid - Salamanca
There is also a train from Madrid to Salamanca. This goes from MADRID-CHAMARTIN

What is this frog and skull stuff? Do you mind giving more information? I cannot find them on the pictures :)
Salamanca is famous for these. They are two famous sculptures hidden in the artwork on the university facade. Legend has it that it gives you luck to pass your exams if you can find them. It was a signature of one of the original artists.
Finding them sounds easy but it's not!
They are now a symbol of the city. There is also a hidden astronaut in the new cathedral which one of the latest artists working on a restoration added. It's a unique mark by amazing artists.
You'll have to visit to find them :)
Hopefully one day I will go there :)
