Bay of Fundy - Treasures of Land and Sea
A flower far from home?
This image is a close-up of what appears to be a Virginia Iris. A rare find this far north. For me it is anyway. 😊 Here it is again with the back drop of high tide rolling in near Waterside Beach, New Brunswick.
Exploring the Bay of Fundy
The following are some of the other surprises I found this weekend around the Bay Of Fundy, where you can find the highest tides on Earth!
Lobster Fun!
This blue lobster was another rare find at Collins Lobster Shop! Followed by the Lobster we actually bought that weighed 5 pounds. 😊 It was worth every penny! The shop had a nifty motorcycle made out of lobster shells and I found an old VW hippie bus out back too! 😆💨
Zoom zoom, shroom shroom
Next up! I found a bunch of beautiful mushrooms as I was roaming around the parking lot waiting for my travel buddies to finish exploring the Hopewell Rocks. I'm not a mycologist by any stretch of the imagination so if anyone knows the names of them, please share the knowledge with me in the comments! The last two look like they're making out. 😍
Mating Pheasants
Speaking of making out... I almost ran over this guy crossing the road. He was so colourful! I then saw a brownish (and rather dull-looking) one running away from him into the bushes but this guy was going for his prize, even the truck barreling down on him didn't trip him up one bit. I didn't witness the consequences but I'm sure he had his way with her, dazzling her with all his pretty feathers. 😉 If you look closely on the last picture, you can see her too.
The Ocean Floor
I walked out to the ocean floor when the tides were out, it was quite a distance! I'll be writing another post specifically about that but for now here is what fresh seaweed (green hearts anyone?) and sea sponges look like followed by a close-up of what appears to be a post from an old dyke as mentioned in the story shown below. If these are the same dykes mentioned in that story, then these posts are 300 years old!!! 🤓 With the highest tides in the world coming in and out and in and out day after day for centuries, I'm amazed they are still there. You just never know what you're gonna find out there. 😊
Camping at the Shire anyone?
There is much value in driving the back roads of small communities everywhere. This fabulous campsite in New Horton, NB is called Shire Camping and not only does it have silly-fun decor with stunning views, it's also free!!! Yes indeed. I don't know if that's because it sits next to the funniest-named cemetery I've ever seen or not. 🤔 Then again, maybe 200 year-old sailor ghosts do roam the mists of the Shire grounds at night? I'd pay for that and go for free!!! Hmmm... 💨 Maybe I'll find out next time because this is where I'm going to stay. No doubt about it. 💗
