A Soda on Independence Square

Throwback to a Different Time

While visiting the historic city square in Independence, Missouri, we stopped in to Clinton's. Clinton's is an old fashioned soda shop where you can get a handmade soda from a "soda jerk" made with their own phosphates. Their staff is fast and friendly with virtually no wait. The soda itself is a treat (I recommend the Cream Soda), but they also offer hand-dipped ice cream and other favorites. Additionally, the store has some real historic roots not just locally, but even internationally.

Humble Beginnings of Harry S. Truman

While at Clinton's, you can read a letter written by Harry Truman while serving as President of the United States recalling his days working at Clinton's Drug Store (the original primary function of the shop) as a youth. It was one of Truman's first jobs and he recalls how he had to sweep and mop the floors, make ice cream, and keep the store stocked. A very working class start for the man that would eventually oversee the U.S. in finishing WWII and through the Korean War.

Clinton's Today

If you are visiting Independence, Missouri (about 15 minutes from Kansas City), this nice little shop is worth a visit for a soda or ice cream. You can browse some of their historic photos and articles on the walls. You can also see where other visitors have come from and put a pin on the map if your place in the world hasn't been represented yet. If you love the old school soda, you can take some of Polly's Pop to go with you. It's made and bottled right there in Independence down the street from Clinton's. There are some other cool souvenirs as well.

Apparently, someone else had already visited Clinton's from St. Petersburg, Russia so we didn't need to add a pin to the map. Glad to see Russia was representing well at Clinton's.

Look for some more posts about the wonderful Independence, Missouri square and its significant history as the launching point for the famous Oregon, California, and Sante Fe Trails, which began from this small town long ago.

I really enjoyed the story, as well as your pictures, of Clinton's and Truman. As far as Polly's Pop, I recommend the Root Beer! I wonder if there are any flavors of phosphates that have been there since Truman was working. Maybe some classics like strawberry.

Hey there. Thanks for the comment. I would bet the Root Beer, Creme Soda, and Strawberry have been there since Truman's day.

I bet it is tasty, and the history of this place is really cool as well.

Wow! This is so awesome to be featured by @buildawhale and @upmyvote. Thanks so much to reading, commenting, and suggesting it. I really appreciate the support.

How humbling that must have been to know that a former President once mopped the floor where you walked. I would be curious to know what that young man thought of as he worked, if he ever had an inkling of what his future held in store. Or those around him, as they viewed him as did the grunt labor as they enjoyed their refreshments.

Looking forward to your post on the history as a launching pad. A little off topic but a great book you might enjoy is:

Year of Decision:1846. I was unable to put it down as the author gave life to the events, not a boring recitation of fact. You really got a feel for the personalities involved as events unfolded.

Thanks for the book recommendation. I will look it up and see if I can pick up a copy this week. If you like history with a bit of personality/fiction mixed in, try - The Killer Angels. One of my favorite books on the Civil War/Gettysburg. I will post some more about Independence, Missouri and Harry Truman (the man who dropped the bomb). His presidential library is about 1 mile from where I'm staying this week.

I couldn’t love this more! What a great town and the soda shop is awesome. I’m a vintage lover from Chicago, nice to meet you!

Thanks so much for commenting. I am glad you liked the post. I thought it was a very cool place and the soda was good too. So much history for relatively small city (5th largest in Missouri - 110,000 people). Great to meet you also. Looking forward to reading through some of your stuff.
