Are you a traveler!

If you are a traveler and don't know where your next trip should be then this post should be a big help for you.

Have you ever heard about the newest country in the world named Kosovo ?

Population with an estimate of 1.8 million, and a territory of 10,908 km2, Kosovo is landlocked in the central Balkan Peninsula. From 1999 – 2008 Kosovo was under UN protectorate until the Kosovo’s parliament declared independence and became a sovran democratic state.

Why should you visit Kosovo?

Surviving the day in Kosovo would be pretty easy. Here in this part of the world pretty much everybody (people under 50s) speaks English. There are plenty of hostels and private flats you can rent with an affordable price. So you don’t have to scratch your head about organizing the daily routine, but rather start planing what do you want to do when you get here.

If you like hiking, there are places like Rugova National Park and Sharr Mountains that you wouldn’t wanna miss. “Winter is coming” yeah, Brezovica resort is the ideal place for winter sports. Is it antiquity you’re after? We covered that part a little bit on some section, there are great places for you to explore. There are bars, night clubs and other social gatherings going on downtown somewhere, if you’re more like a party-animal.

Places to visit:

Rugova Valley is located in the heart of Dukagjini, in north-western Kosovo.

It covers an area of 32.000 hectares. Its highest peak is Coursed Mountain, with an altitude of 2560 meters. Among several characteristics that distinguish this valley, following are the most important ones

-Bistrica River, which passes throughout 12 kilometers of the valley
-Waterfalls that fall from a height of 30 meters
-Two lakes at an altitude of 1 800 meters above sea level and
-A number of caves

Rugova Valley is considered as an ideal place to spend a day or a couple of days, when you need to relax and get away from the daily routine and dynamic life in the city. It is a quiet preserved and unexplored region, and this offers a unique entertainment opportunity for the lovers of eco and rural tourism.

Holy Bridge is located at the entrance of White Drin Canyon, in the south-west of Kosova.

It is another spot in this area, frequently visited by the tourists. The uniqueness of this bridge, is that it is built above an interesting and unique canyon which was created when White Drini River during a geomorphologic process opened a gizzard between two lime rocks. The bridge is 70 meters high, and the distance between the bridge and the river floor is 30 meters.

The bridge dates since WWII and is believed to become seen as holy after a human sacrifice was made there.

Marble Cave

Marble cave is a cave made of marble cliffs formed by the metamorphosis of limestone.

It is situated in the municipality of Lipljan. The cave was discovered in 1966 by a citizen building his house and it was opened for tourists in 1976. The cave is 1260 meters long, while the tourist path is around 500 meters long. Huge pillars are predominant in the halls and the ceiling is covered with stalactites. Many pillars reach heights of up to 5 meters and they are covered with spikes, which is a special oddity of the cave.

Ornaments are in different colors, ranging from aragonite white crystal to red, with all shades in between these two contrasting colors. It is said that it takes 3000 years for 1 mm of it to grow! The air temperature ranges between 12 C and 15 C.

The most attractive peaks of the Sharr-Mountains are: Luboten , Bistra Peak, Black Peak, Kobilica Peak, Peak of Von Korff, Zallina Peak, Tërepeznica Peak, Great Vraca and Small Vraca. The highest peak is Luboteni Peak, which reaches an altitude of 2553 meters, and is believed to mean “Beautiful view” (originating from the French words: “le bo ten”).

Artana (Novobërda) Castle is an archaeological site situated in the highest peak of the Novobërdo Mountain, 30 kilometers east of Prishtina.

The castle was built during medieval years in the city of Novobërdo, at 42.61778 meters latitude. Novoberda was one of the biggest cities in Balkans and had a great importance. It was regarded as one of the richest cities in Balkans because of its natural resources, and consequently was often called as “the city of silver and gold”. The castle was built on top of a dead volcano crater, whose ruins can still be noticed these days.

The castle is actually on a process of restoration, a project funded by UNESCO.

Mirusha Waterfall

Mirusha Waterfalls is a chain of waterfalls found in the Mirusha River, situated on the south of the Gremnik Mountains on the way to Gjakova at an altitude of 572 meters. Its distance from the capital city is approximately one hour.

Mirusha River engraved a 10 km long canyon and created 13 river lakes with 12 waterfalls between them. The waterfall with the biggest height is the one between the sixth and seventh lake, and it is 22 meters high.

Those waterfalls between the lakes, together with the stunning landscape, and rocks and caves around the waterfalls, form an overwhelming sight and present a special tourism attraction. Although the water temperature is usually quite cold, throughout summer when the temperature is high, swimming there can be incredibly pleasant.

And this is not even 1% of this beautiful country but if you want to know more about this place come and visit

Thank you for the detailed post! Although the newest country in the world, as of now, is South Sudan. I have only been to Prishtina and Ferizaj, because a kind man, while hitch-hiking, paid for the hotel and the breakfast served directly to my room!

In Prishtina, I went to the beer festival and I have met some of the kindest people in Europe. I got so much love there that some of the people I met during that event were almost acting like bodyguards, because too many people wanted to take a picture with me!

I hope to come back one day!

PS: for those into politics, there is a Bill Clinton statue and an avenue dedicated to George W. Bush in Prishtina!

Thank you south sudan for ruining my post lol.

Kidding i am glad you had the chance to be in Prishtina for the beer fest i take it you had a great tims then.

You are right, as it's the newest country in Europe, for now (we will see what happens with Scotland and Catalunya) ;)

I had a great time! Only reason I am not going back is 1) there aren't really flights from Italy to Kosovo and 2) it's the only country in the Balkans where I need a passport to get in.

Yeah unfortunately true check what i've written about this in my first post...

But still it's worth visiting just for the machiatos i take it you had one :)

I remember entering a bar for coffee but don't remember about macchiatos! I come from Italy anyway so usually, if I drink coffee in the Balkans, it's the Turkish/Greek/Bosnian one, as it's one of the best ones around. Next time I will make sure I try it, and that post you linked was very nice!

Wow....holly bridge , marble cave...waterfall, mountains...etc...what a wonderful place to visit...thanks for the info...truly nice place to visit. What of the foods , transport system and sporting locations...any tour guide links?
