Foça İzmir'in kuzeyinde yer alan bir sahil ilçesidir.

Phokaia is a coastal village placed in the north of Izmir. It is connected to Izmir with 70 km highway. The cith was Ion settlement in ancient age. The foundations of today's western civilizations were laid in Ionia in the 6th century BC and Foça was one of the most important Ion settlement. His name was taken from the seals living in the seas surrounding him and the openings of the nearby islands. ( Phokaia is the name seals in ancient age and in Turkish we call seals as "fok" ) The name of Phokaia in ancient times has changed over time to Foça.

The city was founded in the 11th century BC. The Phokaias known in history master sailor, established many colonies in the Aegean, Mediterranean and Black Seas with their talents and achievements in the field of engineering. Some of their most important colonies were Elea (Italy), Massalia (France), Ampuria (Spain

Foçalılar kentlerini şimdilerde nesli tükenme tehlikesiyle karşı karşıya olan sevimli akdeniz foklarıyla simgeleştiriyorlar.

The Phokaias are symbolizing their citiy with the cute Mediterranean seals, which are now facing the danger of extinction. (Foça is Phokaia and Aşk means love in Turkish. So they create a word Foçaşk ;)

Phokaia is one of the coastal village that could save its old form. The fishing boats, the stone and the narrow streets, the old houses and the warm people will charm you at first sight. Through the coast I looked at all houses one by one and I saw that each house has a different architectural form. Each of them like came today from another tale. Do you agree with me?

There is an ancient castle named Beşkapılar in Foça. This castle was given to the Genoese in 1275 and repaired by them. After Phokaia joined the Ottoman lands in 1455, the walls were restored and equipped with pavilions. Scientific excavations are being made in this castle surrounding the city.

And lastly the windmills .. On the top of the mountain on the left side of the slope you have come to Foça, there are historical windmills. It is now torn down but still reminiscent of history. The restoration of the windmills is planned in the near future. I think it's a good idea to open this place in the open. I took the pictures of windmills while turning back from Phokaia in the bus. I am happy to catch them ;)

I need to clarify something that Phokaia is a coastal village consisting of an old and new Phokaia. There are 16 km between them. Because I heard that old Phokaia has more historical structure, I visited old Phokaia. Don't leave here without eating sea food ;)

It's very easy to go Phokaia. You will get on izban( metro) from Izmir and you will get off in Hatundere station. From there a city bus will take you to Phokaia. It takes around 20 minutes. As same city bus will take you back to metro every 1 hour.

Sort:

I haven't heard of such place until now. What country is this? Looking at the pictures, the place has lots of heritage.

It is in my country Turkey. It is 70 km far from Izmir - the city in the west of Turkey. But going there is very easy. There is metro and city bus.

Amazing place. I wont dream of coming to that place because its just impossible. But if even chances, certainly will grab it :)

Why it is impossible?

No budget :)
