Road of Childhood Memories

Hello my dear steemit friends,

Today we vent to visit my grandmother in western Herzegovina. It was an important trip because my girlfriend needs to get blessing from her.

My grandmother is one of those strong woman who carries the whole household. While her husband was in Germany, she was raising five kids and also taking care of farm animals.
She is 87 years old but she is still pretty vital. I always ask her if she is lonely but the rural life keeps her pretty active and occupied. She still cooks, cleans and grows vegetable in small garden.

My Grandmother

When I go for a visit I always try to help her with something. This time I chopped some firewood while my girlfriend was going through thorough examination. Luckily she passed it :)

Firewood

After we spend some time with her, we decided to saunter through the village to see some of my childhood places.
We are big fan of rural and Herzegovina is the best place for rustical lovers.
We stumbled upon an old well where I used to drink water after playing football. Funny thing is that I wasn't allowed to drink from it because grandmother was always scared that I will fell in.
Water in it is so cold and refreshing that you feel younger with every drop you drink.

Old Well

As we mentioned in post about Dalmatia, the biggest problem is the migration of young people. They all try to find better life in bigger cities and all they leave behind are empty houses.
This was the house of my childhood best friend, but he is in Sweden now. I got very sad from seeing it empty because it used to be full of life. One of my best childhood memories are connected to this house. We played there every day and now its just a pile of old stones.

Abandoned Home

As we continue down the road, our attention was grabbed by an horseshoe with holy ivy on it. It was the first time we came across something like that attached to a house. Luckily we encountered some old people that explained us the tradition behind it.
The story is that on Christmas Eve everyone brings horseshoes and ivies to a Church so the priest can bless them. Later on, they put them on the entrance of house so the next year can be full of happiness and luck.

Horseshoe and Holy Ivy

Most people have very little to no money here. The best way you can feel it is in architecture. Everything here is built with stones found in nature. But people don't mind it because they live peaceful life connected to mother nature. That's why they all look happier than the most people we get to meet in bigger cities.

Farm Life

After a road full of childhood memories, we returned to my grandmother's place and later went back home. It was an amazing trip and we plan to return soon maybe as a husband and wife because girlfriend got the blessing :)
