Summer Snow - Lake Hart SA
Tourists who come to South Australia and ask about interesting destinations will be given information about Adelaide and close surroundings like Kangaroo Island, Flinders Ranges and thats about it! I don’t say that those destinations are not worth visiting but there is so many points of interest which are not mentioned in brochures. If you rent motorhome or car you can eventually stumble upon something you never seen before that tourist information centres don’t bother to mention, or you can miss opportunity to see something unique and find out about it only after you leave.
Many people around the world have no clue how big Australia actually is. Road from Adelaide to Darwin is over 3000 km long (and thats just small portion of it) and you can see many interesting sites, one of those is Lake Hart. !steemitworldmap -31.233647 lat 136.405563 long d3scr
Situated 220kms north of Port Augusta or 470kms northwest of Adelaide on the Stuart Highway Lake Hart is real natural gem. It resides in the The Woomera Prohibited Area (WPA) and it is very popular rest area and camping site. Even if you never heard of it, the moment you see it you will be mesmerised.
Till 1931 this was the scene of a thriving industry, the lake was once site of a salt mine and you can still find original wooden infrastructure / catchment pens from the small rail line that was built to run the salt harvesting machinery.
If you want to see this lake of salt up close or walk on deposits you need to follow around 300m long path. Even this rusted car which sits there for who knows how long is something that makes this site interesting.
Along its shores there is a railroad which is blocking direct access to lake so to get to it you need to walk through huge pipe/tunnel, and then magical site!
Everything aroud you becomes sparkly and blindingly white, looks similar to snow, yet totally different.
Salt is hugging all things which were touched by moisture.
While roaming around I stumbled upon a little curious lizard unwilling to get out of the bush.
We spent night on camping ground, sky was clear and we enjoyed sitting outside under the millions of stars. What can I say PURE MAGIC!
