Travelling with DieBaasMan #2: Beautiful Graaff-Reinet
Welcome Dear Steemit friends.
I would like to take you all on a journey to yet another breathtaking South African destination, this time we will be visiting the "Beautiful Graaff-Reinet"
Overview of Graaff-Reneit
I would like to start our tour with some aerial shots taken from a hilltop overlooking this stunning little town in Eastern Cape, South Africa.
The little town of Graaff-Reneit was named after Governor Cornelis Jacob van de Graaff. The second part of the name comes from wife's maiden name which was Reinet.
Graaff-Reinet actually happens to be the fourth oldest town in South Africa
I order from Oldest to Newest:
- Cape Town
- Stellenbosch
- Swellendam
- Graaff-Reinet
Reinet House
A lovely photo of the Graaff-Reinet museum at the end of the Street, it is also known as "Reinet House".
The Graaff-Reinet Museum, used to be the Dutch Reformed Church house. It was built in 1812, it used to be home to a few ministers and by 1906 the building was being used as a boarding house. It was used to train girls to become teachers. The late Miss Helen Murray eventually named the house “Reinet House”.
John Rupert Theater
The building used to be home of the "Great London Church" and the later on also as the "United Congregational Church".
In 1969 the building was acquired and restored by Doctor Anton Rupert and eventually donated to the town Council of Graff-Reinet. The building is actually named after John Rupert, he was the father of Dr Anton Rupert.
The theater plays a great cultural role in the lifes of the citizens of Graaff-Reinet. The theater is being run by volunteers, who tries to show at least two films each month.
Pioneer Restaurant.
Is another gem of Graaff-Reinet this Restaurant is housed in a national monument which is part of the history of the town.
Some of their signature dishes include:
Lambs neck, Oxtail, Karoo Tjops, Bobotie & Baby Beef Bombay.
Below is a few street view shots of the old cape styled buildings.

This is a lovely post of South Africa. I've only been to Jo'burg once many years ago on business, and unfortunately didn't get to see much of the city.
