Anza Borrego Desert State Park: The Iron Giants of Borrego Springs

in #travel6 years ago

When one thinks of dragons or serpents, often what comes to mind is storybook fantasy. Images of fire breathing lizards, winged beasts feared by all. Well, i actually got to see a dragon up close, in the desert city of Borrego Springs.

Now of course this wasnt the fire breathing type of dragon but a very detailed statue of one towering high over me still conveying a sense of fear and awe. This serpent wasnt the only iron giant to stand, but one of a plethora of very detailed creation of Ricardo Breceda

Ricardo Brecceda moved to Borrego Springs California for his job and one christmas his daughter asked for a dinosaur after seeing the movie Jurassic Park III. He welded up a sculpture for her and continued creating sculptures until he was discovered by a businessman named Dennis Avery. Avery paid him to construct more than 100 sculptures on his property of Galleta Meadows based on fossilised creatures of the Anza Borrego desert as well as mythical creatures.

These sculptures dot the landscape down the entire length of Borrego Springs Road, but are mostly grouped in two areas. One area is the area of Galleta Meadows and the other large group of sculptures is further south out of town.

I wanted to share with you photos of a large majority of the statues:

Thank you for taking the time to read this and I hope you enjoyed my visual tour of these awe inspiring iron giants. Feel free to visit them yourself by traveling to Borrego Springs in Anza Borrego Desert State Park.

Wonderful sculptures! Wonderful place! It's good when businessmen get into art. Thank you for the excursion!

Awesome dude. Haven't been out to Anza Borrego in ages. Didn't know this stuff was out there. There are sculptures like this by Vail Lake, just outside of Temecula. I wonder if it's the same artist's?

Found you thanks to @derekrichardson. I'm a rockhound! Cheers!

They are all within the city of borrego springs so they are easy to miss. I have seen those statues as well but they are not a part of the ones in borrego springs. they look very similar so i wouldnt be surprised. He mentioned you to me as well, im all over the 395. Thats my fav highway.

Ha! Way cool man. I like the one with you in between the 2 bighorns.

...oh and of course the prospector! That one is to cool.

Thank you! who knows how long it took the guy to build these.

Cool place. Also, lol to that photo of you, the goats and your dog photobombing.
