Drum Tower Performance, Beijing, China

Gulou, or The Drum Tower and Zhonglou, or The Bell Tower of Beijing, were built in 1272. Drums and bells were instruments used by the ancient Chinese. Eventually, the tower became the Big Ben of Beijing. Time was announced by the beating drums, situated high above the ground to allow the sound to travel. The tower is still in use, primarily as a tourist attraction. The steep stairwell to the tower rewards tenacious visitors with a rhythmic percussion performance. The tower also provides amazing views of the city and serves as a bit of a museum, with several displays for visitors to peruse while waiting for the performance to begin. I have never used D-Tube before, so this is my first attempt at bringing a video to my reviews that I created myself. This video was shot on a point and shoot camera. I did not have any special stability equipment or high speed editing capabilities. What you see is what you get. But you may still enjoy the performance in this video.

If you don't feel like watching a video of the performance, you can still get the flavor of the Drum Tower from these photos. Also created with an inexpensive point and shoot camera:

We attended the first performance of the day at the Drum Tower. There are several performances during the day beginning at 9:30 am until 16:45 pm. Peak season includes an additional 5:15 pm performance. Admission to the Drum Tower was CNY 20, or approximately $3 US. For another CNY 10, you can get combined tickets that includes admission to the Bell Tower. We opted for just the Drum Tower.

I hope you enjoyed this travel review. All photos and video are my own. They may be reproduced with prior permission.

China has to go along with world trends. That's democracy, liberty, individual freedom. China sooner or later has to go that way. It cannot go backward.
