Cambodia Temple #9: Chau Say Tevoda Temple

in #travel7 years ago (edited)

Chau Say Tevoda is a temple at Angkor area in Siem Reap province, Cambodia. It is situated just east of Angkor Thom, directly south of Thommanon across the Victory Way (it pre-dates the former and post-dates the latter). Constructed in the mid-twelfth century, it is a Hindu temple in the Angkor Wat style. Chau Say Tevoda reopened in late 2009 and is currently completely accessible.

Chau Say Tevoda is a small temple of similar design and floor plan to that of Thommanon situated across the road, however for years showed up as Thommanon's disregarded sister, languishing in essentially worse condition than Thommanon, which had been reestablished back in the 1960s. The little area of the temple envisioned to one side is right now during the time spent being remade. Chau Say Tevoda appears to stand in partnership with Thommanon, yet in reality was manufactured considerably later in Suryavarman II's rule. Chau Say Tevoda shows some well-executed engravings that are in still reasonable condition, particularly those on the eastern gopura. Despite the fact that most engravings are Hindu-themed, there are likewise some Buddhist-themed reliefs. The eastern walkway from the temple leads to the Siem Reap River a couple of hundred meters away.

History

The temple was in a dilapidated state with 4,000 of its components lying scattered on the embankment and in the Siem Reap River. Between 2000 and 2009 some of these components were assembled under a restoration project supported by the People's Republic of China. Initially this temple was somewhat constructed in the mid-twelfth century under the rule of King Suryavarman II. Further supplementation of structures was done under the rule of Jayavarman VII. In spite of the fact that the temple was constructed under Hindu kings amid the eleventh and twelfth centuries with predominantly Hindu gods, for example, Shiva and Vishnu, representation of Buddha pictures was translated to have been constructed amid the rule of Dharanindravarman, father of Jayavarman VII, who ruled from Preah Khan of Kompong.
