Cambodia Temple #1: Banteay Srei Temple

Banteay Srei temple, built in 10th century, is famous for its complicated decoration carved in pinkish sandstone that covers the walls like tapestry. 

Banteay Srei is a perfect miniature, a fairy royal residence in the heart of a huge and secretive forest, and that each kid's heart has longed after, however which mature years has sadly proved too lovely to be true. What's more, here it is, in the Cambodian forest at Banteay Srei temple, carved not out of the stuff that dreams are made of, but of solid sandstone.

The captivating Banteay Srei temple is about the universally adored site. The unique attraction of this temple lies in its amazing state of preservation, small size and excellence of decoration.  

Banteay Srei temple was built by Raja Guru Yajnavaraha for establishment Linga "Tribhuvana Maheçvara" in the year 967. A unique feature of the embellishment was the utilization of a hard pink sandstone.  

The general opinion among French archeologists who worked at Angkor is that Banteay Srei temple is a 'valuable gem' and a 'jewel in Khmer art'. Banteay Srei, as it is known by local people, was initially called Isvarapura, according to inscriptions. It was by a Brahmin of royal descent who was spiritual teacher to Jayavarman V. Some said that the engineering and improvement of Banteay Srei temple is closer to Indian models than any other temple at Angkor.  

Architectural and embellishing features are unique and fine. A tapestry like background of foliage covers the walls of the structures in the central group as if a deliberate attempt had been made to leave no space undecorated. The engineering is differentiated by superimposed pediments, decorative designs on the frames of the curves and standing figures in the specialties. Panels are decorated with scenes inspired by Hindu epics.    

It was found in 1914 by Lieutenant Marec and cleared by H. Parmentier and V. Goloubew in 1924; and did the anastylosis by H. Marchal in 1931 to 1936.
