Laniakea Beach, meet Hiwahiwa "The Precious One"

After we had our tour through the Dole Plantation we decided we wanted to see some of the north shore beaches of Oahu hoping to see some sea turtles sun bading. We hopped on the bus and decided to leave at Laniakea Beach bus stop which lead us to a 5 minute walk to te beach, meeting our first sea turtle ever!!
It has been told by a volunteer that nowadays 5 sorts of sea turtles are endangered foremost because a lot of turtles have been caught accidently by fishing gear. They are also used for consumption and trade of the sea turtles shells, this makes it important to care for the sea turtles and that is what different foundations do as well as their volunteers. They have shifts of three hours and they make sure nobody is too close to the turtle(at least 3 m away) so the turtle can rest without annoying people touching her.
We were lucky to meet a female honu(sea turtle) Hiwahiwa, which means the precious one in Hawaiian, she is approximately 47 years old, and her weight is 104 kgs. She has been injured in 2001 and this can be seen by a crack on her shell. A vet repaired the shell with an acrylic dental patch.
In 2002 she was nesting and laying eggs again 500 miles northwest of Laniakea beach at the French Frigate Shoals. In 2010 she again migrated and after 32 days at sea, and se returned to Laniakea beach with her satellite antennae broken and she has been there sunbading for the whole year. She definitely found herself a beautiful place to rest, and I hope she likes her fans!
