Staying for a week and can't get rid of your urge to buy fresh cheese, fruit and vegetables? Cross the bridge and you’ll be in the hive of activity.

Avoid the Markthaal though, it's aimed more at tourists with better purchasing power. I've heard locals say they never do their groceries there. Luckily, Tuesdays and Saturdays are your chance to visit the open market just in front!

The bad

Market is open only two days a week so you need to put some effort into your timetable if you want to make the most of the potentially cheaper goods.
I've noticed a lot of labels on fruit and vegetable. Better part of it is probably resold from bigger chains and not really better or healthier.
Have you experienced Dutch weather? Mist, fog, wind? Better be ready, because the odds of sunny weather are not in your favour. But, you can buy some fresh lemons to help with the newfound cold.
The society here is big on organic products. I have no strong opinion on that but ask before you buy if it's a must for you. And if it's busy, be ready to shout sometimes. Preferably in Dutch.

The good

Markets sell really fresh products most of the time. Even if it is not organic, chances are you'll see it there before it reaches market shelves. Some of it is freshly picked locally.
There are weird, exotic fruit and vegetables that you can miss in your regular store. Keep your eyes open.
Feeling like doing some good? People selling their own product will especially appreciate it. Make yourself feel good by not handing out money to huge supermarket chains.
Strike a conversation with sellers. Learn a new Dutch word, or just practice the basics. Ask them how they grow their tulips or where the cows who supply the milk for the cheese live!
Listen to people chatting around you, maybe you find a fellow expat! It's a great place to meet and stroll. Usually, if the weather is stable, people look really happy.

There are also a wide variety of different fast food you can buy after an hour of haggling! Buy some cheese to add more calories and you are all set. Happy hunting!
