Australia #1 - Manly, New South Wales

in #travel7 years ago (edited)

The second phase of our 90 day roadtrip escaping the Canadian winter was almost 2 months spent in Australia, trying, via trains, planes and automobiles, and the occasional ferry, to see as much of this wonderful country as we could - because we will probably only come this way once (finances and age being the main factors here!).

A ferry in Sydney Harbour - avoid traffic and sightsee without paying for a harbour tour!

Air Tahiti Nui - one of the world's great airlines in my opinion - flew us across the International Date Line to Auckland, New Zealand, where, after a short stop, we boarded an Air New Zealand flight to Sydney (another great airline - as an indicator, the safety video used surfing to get across its message!).

The beach at Manly - not very busy in the early morning.

We arrived at peak afternoon traffic so had an interesting taxi ride through the city to the suburb of Manly, which friends living in Sydney had recommended as a great place to stay. It did not disappoint!

Manly Wharf - about 5 minutes walk from our apartment.

Our studio apartment was on the edge of a very nice pedestrian precinct, the Corso - turn right to the ferry, turn left to the beach!

Some very fine buildings on the waterfront, but pricey! Our studio was relatively inexpensive, however we traded our view of Moorea in Tahiti (see my 3 posts on our week-long stopover there) for the back of a multi-level parking garage! But we weren't in this wonderful apartment enough to care. Travel note: book in Manly well in advance because it is very very popular!

This is the day the old guy tried surfing for the first time. brightonbonnie misunderstood my camera instructions, and the historical record of this great event was lost forever! (Edit: she just reminded me it was body-surfing, not the real stuff. She is still guilty in my books!)

IMG_7630.JPG

Told you - turn left to the beach! The temperature here is less than Tahiti, mid-20s Celsius, but humid, so the breeze off the water is great.

Another view of the Corso. Our apartment was just down the street to the left. One of these trees was home to very very many green parrots, who we never saw, but make quite a racket at sundown and sunrise! Close to some wonderful cafes and shops where we could get anything we needed.

One last view of Manly Beach, children from a school across the road on a break!

Tune in for my next post, as we take the ferry to Circular Quay and the Sydney Opera House!

Thanks to @benfenson for watching over my Oz posts!

Manly is such a beautiful area and great and popular beaches, also a lot of Kiwis live there

sounds like an amazing trip your on

Good morning! Trip was Feb.-April 2016 but I am re-living it on steem!

Check this out:

http://www.steemitworldmap.com/

They asked me to help with beta test - I think it's brilliant! Some issues with some posts I've done, but they are fixing it - except they have to stop for a few days for exams lol! Don't think they are ready yet for multiple users, when they are I'll let you know!

Only 59 or so more posts then I will be in NZ!

Enjoy your day!

OHh OK but still great to follow you on it

that Map s such a cool idea ;)

Thought you would like it - you'll recognize the shots I've used to test the app!

Yes I saw them

It's a great idea look forward to seeing it go live

If you're interested the developers would be happy to have some more testing. What I think they need is confirmation of how to deal with very large cluster markers. If you did multiple posts in NYC - Milford this would give them some ideas. They plan to add filters so you can sort by author, tag, etc. but the sheer volume of the pins ultimately could be challenging. So dealing with marker clusters could be key.

If you are in fact interested it's pretty simple and not very time consuming:

If you look at my post, I put the last line on worldsteemitmap in a word document so I can copy it into my post whenever I need it.

I use Google Earth to get the lat long (decimal format) but Google Maps will work too. I window steem and Google Earth so I can read the lat long and enter them manually.

I also have the worldsteemitmap open in a tab. When you post you will get a reply almost immediately saying you are in the database, with a link to the map, but since you already have the map open go to that tab and hit F5 to refresh, and there it is!

If your post doesn't populate they would like to know.

It would be cool if you can help because I think this is going to be a really good tool!

#worldsteemitmap

Yeah I would be willing to help test it

I see the entry at the for the map seems not to difficult to do

If they want me to help let me know

Yeah - they told me OK for you to join in!

sounds like an epic trip

It really was! If you check out any of my posts let me know if I've got anything wrong or just skewed - I like to be accurate. Thanks for looking at this one. Have a great day!

I finally got started on your journey... I wanted to do it properly and had this open on a tab until I could get to read all parts at one go! Gosh... I would love to spend two months touring around Australia... or anywhere at all!
I saw the steemit map on someone else's post too - was wondering what it was - very cool! I feel I'm embarking on this journey too - lol. Oops to your (non)surfing shot... ;)

You've made my day! How nice to open up steem this morning (coming up to 5 am in Canada!) and discover you are on my journey! I'm so glad you are enjoying it. Just about to post another. Take care and have a great weekend.

PS - you aren't actually at the start - there are 3 posts from Tahiti that I think you will enjoy too, and there's a bit of info in those that gives you some more context for our trip!

PPS - the Steemit Worldmap is easy to include in your post. Just copy the line from one of my posts, change the decimal lat and long values (I get them off Google Earth but Map gives it too), then change the short description of the location. I'm helping the developers test it, and it's just about finished now. I think it will be a great tool for searching locations and finding posts about places you are interested in.

Haha... it's 5:22pm here now so we're 12 hours apart! :) Ohhh yes, I do know you have the Tahiti posts - keeping that for a little later - lol. I missed out saying, "...at the start of your Australia stretch..." ;) Haha - thank you for the reminder anyway....Will go check it out now...before I forget or get to other 'stuff'! :D Will have a thorough look at the steemit map too...

Too cool with the time difference, easy to remember without having my brain explode! When we were on our trip our grand-daughters had a real problem with the time difference. We would tell them we were just finishing dinner and they would say 'but it's breakfast time'! My wife had some issues too but I was really proud of her when we crossed the International Date Line and she pointed out the folks at the back of the plane were on a different day than us at the front! lol!

Re: map, just remember not every post can have the lat long for your window!

Oh yes, I can understand how your grand-daughters and wife has issues with it - many do! And it takes a conscious effort to keep it in mind!! I love her reference to those behind the plane being behind a day! Lol...

Yeah yeah, I read steemitworldmap saying the same (I think!) about the marker for posts... they should just give me a great big one for all the various posts - a permanent feature...! Hahahaaa...

Such a beautiful taken...Following you for more.
Please visit my profile, hope you will like my photography, if you like please follow and upvote me for future images...@saan

Thanks - following you already, you do good work! About 59 posts to go in Australia, then on to New Zealand. Glad you are following my journey!

What a great post, Greg! You are traveling the right way! A few months at a time to really discover what a place is like. I got a real laugh out of the surfing shot. :) (or should I say the NOT surfing shot?)

Wonderful scenery and for sure, I will be following your journey as you are in a place that I have never been to!

The map was super cool! I hope they succeed in making that work! Happy Sunday!

Upped and Steemed

Denise - thanks for comments and support! Map will be a good tool I think.

My pleasure, Greg! I am looking forward to it!

Your Post Has Been Added To The Steemit World Map!
Go Check It Out At: http://SteemitWorldMap.com

Congratz, you just have been resteemed by @pixresteemer!
(All right but who is pixresteemer?)

Beautiful pictures..sorry about your missing historical shot. A little envious of your extended stay in Sydney. My trip was much too short and hope to return.
We did visit Manly Beach in October - their Spring. There a was a festival and the whole area was crowded.
Looking forward to see your travels in NZ. Thanks

Thanks for feedback. Re: the shot, have to go edit - guilty wife just reminded me it was body-surfing, not the real stuff!

NZ will be great, some awesome places, but have to get through some equally awesome stops in Oz first. Following.
