How do you go to ... Road Trip? [EN]

in #travel6 years ago

Three years ago, we asked ourselves the question of going on an adventure ... but not just going for a short week by the sea, or two weeks of travel across the Gaspésie! No adventure, the real one!
Good some leave a whole year! There it is wow, I take my hat!
With my M we left 39 days and I think it's already a great adventure. But that's the organization.

1 - Determine your destination, your desires

First you have to choose the country. For us easy Canada and the United States. Yes, but it is vast country especially the United States and Canada. So we bought tour guides, including Routard guides (which are really good for travel), we looked on the internet (Trip Advisor).
From all this research we had a list of things to see and desires! Make yourself a list of things to see absolutely and others that you can pass.

2- Stall all this in a pre-planning

How long to leave? Or land? Crucial information!
For that you need a map, and identify the places you want to visit. Then create a logic circuit (a loop?). It will give you an idea of organization.
Then prepare a sheet, a pencil and especially an eraser! Plan every day with things to see, to do. Do not forget to count the trip, because a country like the United States there can be a whole day trip!
And here you begin to get an idea of the time you will need. Add a day or two for the unexpected.
You must also learn about driving licenses, car rental (because a car rented in Canada can not go to the United States but the opposite is not true), ....

3- Find the airline and book the tickets

There Google is your friend. Everyone has his favorites.

4- Book a rental car, some accommodations

For the rental car I decided to call on a company that deals with planning stays. Because all American car rental sites are in English (normal) but I do not necessarily understand the small lines ... and it bothers me. So we used Authentik usa to rent our car. I could have them on the phone and see their conditions. And we were not disappointed because we had an impact on the windshield at the 12,000km and before last day of our Road Trip. Everything was taken care of!
For accommodation there are places to go very early, especially in national parks and especially in Yellowstone. We had to book several months in advance. Likewise for Las Vegas, and we should have done it for San Francisco because everything was full and we had to shift our dates.
Then we made the choice of camping alternating with hotels to do the laundry. Generally, we called hotels or booked over the internet during our endless trips.

5- Deepen the planning

And that's the moment you start dreaming. You're starting to see you in the middle of the bison, in the desert, in San Francisco ... Magic!

6- Think about the suitcase

What to take? Always the big question! Especially being a woman! But between a suitcase of camping equipment and our backpacks there was not much room left! We had to share a suitcase. Then the washers there are everywhere!

7- Be flexible

In your organization you have to be flexible! Never say never! A storm, a car problem ... can hurt your organization. For us it was a small baby in my stomach, so hiking at 3000m altitude for 5 hours were not possible (we tried!), Camping by +40 ...

8- Enjoy, open your eyes

The day is coming, you are straining, you can not wait, but wow what an adventure.
And finally the day is here!

And life would be what without adventure?
How did you organize your Road Trip? Where did you go?
