🇦🇺 Fraser Island - The biggest sand island in the world / Fraser Island - Die größte Sandinsel der welt
In December 2013 we went to Fraser Island which is off Queensland on the Australian Eastcoast. Fraser Island is known as the biggest sand island in the world. The fact that it is a sand island makes it necessary to go there with a 4x4 car. You can either go with your own vehicle or book a tour. There is one day tours as well as tours with overnight stays.
We decided to go for the one day bus tour. It takes a whole day but you actually just spend half a day on Fraser, which is enough time to see 3 of the main attractions on the island.
After the ferry transfer to the island we first had a little tour through the forrest and got some information about the Island.
After that we hopped on a big Bus and started our guided tour.
Im Dezember 2013 gingen wir nach Fraser Island, das vor Queensland an der australischen Ostküste liegt. Fraser Island ist bekannt als die größte Sandinsel der Welt. Die Tatsache, dass es eine Sandinsel ist, macht es notwendig dort mit einem Geländewagen zu fahren. Man kann entweder mit einem eigenen Fahrzeug fahren oder eine Tour buchen. Es gibt Tagesausflüge sowie Touren mit Übernachtungen.
Wir entschieden uns für die eintägige Bustour. Es dauert einen ganzen Tag, aber man verbringt tatsächlich nur einen halben Tag auf Fraser, was genug Zeit ist, um 3 der Hauptattraktionen auf der Insel zu sehen.
Nach der Fährüberfahrt auf die Insel hatten wir zunächst eine kleine Tour durch den Wald und bekamen einige Informationen über die Insel.
Danach hüpften wir in einen großen Bus und starteten unsere geführte Tour.

The SS Maheno shipwreck
Our first stop after a drive along the beach was the famous shipwreck. The ship was washed ashore by a cyclone in 1935 and is remaining there since that which makes it the perfect tourist attraction.
It is a perfect location for taking pictures. If I remember right you can book a flight with a small plane which will start from there.

Unser erster Halt nach einer Fahrt entlang des Strandes war das berühmte Schiffswrack. Das Schiff wurde 1935 von einem Zyklon an Land gespült und ist seitdem dort geblieben, was es zur perfekten Touristenattraktion macht.
Es ist ein perfekter Ort zum Fotografieren. Wenn ich mich recht erinnere, kann man einen Flug mit einem kleinen Flugzeug buchen, das von dort startet.
Eli Creek
After everyone took his 1.000 Photos of the shipwreck we went on to the second stop of the day. Eli Creek the perfect stop for a hot day on Fraser Island.
This is a relatively big creek which transports 4 million liters of cold water per our into the Pacific. The fun part is, that you can walk up the creek, jump into it and then get drifted to the beach again.
Repeat this hundred times a day, its so much fun, but really busy on a hot day.

Nachdem alle ihre 1.000 Fotos vom Schiffswrack gemacht hatten, ging es weiter zum zweiten Stopp des Tages. Eli Creek der perfekte Ort für einen heißen Tag auf Fraser Island.
Dies ist ein relativ großer Bach, der 4 Millionen Liter kaltes Wasser pro Tag in den Pazifik transportiert. Der spaßige Teil ist, dass man den Bach hinauf laufen, hineinspringen und dann wieder zum Strand treiben kann.
Wiederhole das hundertmal am Tag, es macht so viel Spaß, aber an einem heißen Tag ist es sehr voll.
Lake McKenzie
Lake McKenzie, the last stop on our 1-Day Fraser Island Trip was magnificent. The Lake is a perched lake, containing only rainwater, is part of the Great Sandy Nationalpark and is one of the biggest attractions on the island.
The pure white silicia sand, the crystal clear water and the paperbark trees make this place magical. We where told before, that swimming in this lake is a total different experience like any other lakes or the ocean. The water is very low in pH, what you can feel on your body. And they were right, once you´re in that lake you don´t want to get out anymore.
Even in the middle of the summer, this lake doesn´t get warmer than 23 degree. This stop was our absolut favorit on that day trip and we highly recommend you to visit that Lake if you got the chance.
Lake McKenzie
Lake McKenzie, der letzte Halt auf unserem 1-tägigen Fraser Island Trip war großartig. Der See ist ein Hochsee, der nur Regenwasser enthält, Teil des Great Sandy Nationalparks ist und eine der größten Attraktionen auf der Insel.
Der reine weiße Quarzsand, das kristallklare Wasser und die Papierrindenbäume machen diesen Ort zu einem magischen Ort. Uns wurde vorher gesagt, dass das Schwimmen in diesem See eine völlig andere Erfahrung ist, wie alle anderen Seen oder der Ozean. Das Wasser hat einen sehr niedrigen pH-Wert, was man am Körper spüren kann. Und sie hatten Recht, wenn du einmal in diesem See bist, willst du nicht mehr raus.
Selbst in der Mitte des Sommers wird dieser See nicht wärmer als 23 Grad. Dieser Stopp war unser absoluter Favorit auf diesem Tagesausflug und wir empfehlen Ihnen, diesen See zu besuchen, wenn Sie die Chance haben.
Fraser Island is truly one of the main attractions on the whole Eastcoast of Australia and definitely worth a visit. Since our first visit we always wanted to go back, but unfortunately this isnt a place where you can just quickly go to on the weekend. As said you will either need your own 4x4 Vehicle, have to rent a 4x4 vehicle our book a tour which isn´t the cheapest.
We hope to get there again one day!
Fraser Island ist wirklich eine der Hauptattraktionen an der ganzen Ostküste von Australien und definitiv einen Besuch wert. Seit unserem ersten Besuch wollten wir immer wieder zurück, aber leider ist dies nicht ein Ort, an dem man am Wochenende schnell hinfahren kann. Wie gesagt, Sie benötigen entweder Ihr eigenes 4x4 Fahrzeug, müssen ein 4x4 Fahrzeug mieten oder eine Tour buchen, die nicht die günstigste ist.
Wir hoffen, eines Tages wieder dort hin zu kommen!

Very nice post!! Fraser Island is very nice as well but Lake Mc Kenzie in my opinion is one of the most beautiful places in Australia .

Looks great! I’ve been to nearby Moreton Island before for a few days 4WDing and it looks quite similar. I’m keen to see Fraser too.

Fraser Island and especially Lake McKenzie are magical places. I’m probably one of the few people who’ve actually scuba dived in the lake about 20 years ago.
it is magical @stephen-somers. Really? that sounds amazing, the sight must be awesome as the water is so clear.
It’s very spooky down there. The white sand slopes steeply to about 8m depth and a gently undulating lake bed covered in about 30cm deep leaf litter. The water visibility is 30m+ with a strange milky blue fade off. There were some small fish and crayfish as well as a few turtles.
oh really that surprises me as they told us there is only 3 species of fishes living in the lake as others won´t survive.
