📸 THAILAND #3, 🙏 The best royal temple: 💫 WAT PHO💫 /photography, 54 photos/

in #travel6 years ago (edited)

Wat Pho is a beautiful Buddhist temple in Bangkok, Thailand. It is also known as the Temple of the Reclining Buddha.

The architecture is very rich, full of bold colors, gold, perfect details and shapes in a very good condition.

There are 6 best first-class royal temples in Thailand and Wat Pho is considered to be in the first place.

The temple complex houses the largest collection of Buddha images in Thailand, including a beautiful golden 46 m long reclining Buddha.

The statue represents the historical Buddha during his last illness, his entry into Nirvana and the end of all reincarnations. The chapel of the reclining Buddha and the statue were built by Rama III in 1832.

One can see beautiful plants too, also many cats and birds coming to enjoy the shade from the strong sun.

The temple is considered the first public university of Thailand, teaching students in the fields of religion, science, and literature through murals and sculptures. A school for traditional medicine and massage has been created at the temple in 1955. It offers courses in Thai medicine.

The full name of the temple is: Wat Phra Chetuphon Vimolmangklararm Rajwaramahaviharn.

Visitors can enjoy a wonderful Thai massage there as well. There are also astrologists at the temple doing readings for the visitors. I have tried them twice. The information is very simple, but accurate. If you have done other astrological readings before it might be very close to what you have heard.

There are two wonderful huge guardian statues, two giants named Yak Wat Pho (the guardian of Wat Pho) and his good friend Yak Wat Jaeng, the guardian of the Temple of Dawn-Wat Arun, an amazing temple I will write soon more about it, which is located on the opposite side. The temples are separated by a river.

One day Yak Wat Pho crossed the Chao Phraya River to see his friend Yak Wat Jaeng to borrow some money. Yak Wat Jaeng gave the money his friend needed. They made an agreement upon when it would be returned, but when the time came for Yak Wat Pho to return the money to his friend, he did not do so.

Angry, Yak Wat Jaeng crossed the river to ask for his money, but his friend refused. They started a big argument, had a massive fight which ended up severely damaging the nearby area. The fight was so big and loud that the god Phra Isuan had to intervene and turned the two giants into stone.

This is the river between the two temples.

Here on the other side one can see the amazing Wat Arun-The Temple of Dawn. The last time I was there it was under reconstruction. In my next Thailand post I will show you before and after images and more about it's very special story. It is my favorite temple in the whole world.

If you have been to Thailand, you might have seen that many standing Buddha statues have a gesture like in the following photo. This gesture is Buddha, who is calming down the ocean. This was my friend Simon from Ireland, who I met in Bangkok.

Another interesting tradition is to put golden leafs on statues. The Buddhist Temple is were people go to pray and give an offering in form of money, lotus flowers, chains made out of fresh jasmine blossoms, fruits, incense sticks, and gold leafs for the Buddha statues.

Often there are also bottles with red drinks for the gods. Where there are Spirit Houses there is Red Fanta, known as Fanta Nam Daeng. Every morning an offering is made to the spirit and an extremely common offering is a fresh red Fanta. The main reason is its color-red. Red is a color connected with luck and good fortune. It is also the color of blood and is a replacement for a blood sacrifice. It’s a symbolic offering of life force.
