Off Leash Adventures: When It Rains, It Pours...So We Went Glamping In A Yurt!

in #travel6 years ago (edited)

Hi Everyone!
Have you ever been on a camping road trip when it rains everyday? It rains so much that your tent is wet, your sleeping bag is wet, your blankets are wet, and you just cant face another freezing cold, wet night in the tent!
This is what happened to myself and @csusbgeochem1 when we took a road trip to Oregon last winter. We'd already woke up to a puddle inside the tent and had to pay for a hotel room for a night to let everything dry off. The next day as we made our way back down towards Bend, we had woke up in yet another tent puddle. We hoped the weather would improve as we drove south, so we could dry things off before bed. But the rain never eased up at all, and we were both dreading another night in the tent! We got to Bullards Beach State Park, North of Bandon, which was our campsite for the night, and started driving round in hope of finding a space with tree cover from the rain...no luck! As it was winter only half the campsite was open and all the spaces were completely open to the elements.
We'd almost lost hope of having a pleasant evening and night, when we noticed this campsite had Yurts for hire. There were only a few and we had to go to the Rangers Station to see if they had already been hired for that night.
They were all booked :(
But we decided to go and ask the camp host (who it stated had the keys to the Yurts, and takes the payment) if we could hire one for the night, on the of chance someone had cancelled.

As Americans seem to like my English accent, we decided that I would talk to the Host, and try to get us a warm bed for the night. As the camper door opened and the Host stepped out in to the rain, he look confused and a little annoyed at being disturbed. In my sweetest tone I explained our predicament, and how all our camping gear was still wet through from that morning, and begged him for a Yurt for the night. "Please take pity on us!"
Well it worked! Even though the campsite was only half open, he allowed us to rent one of the Yurts in the closed section for the night. As we had Buddy with us, we had to stay in the Pet Friendly Yurt, but this was next to the Toilet and Shower Block, so we almost had our own en-suite (we were the only people in this section remember, so only us using these facilities).

Inside the Yurt there was a table and chairs, bunk beds, a futon/sofa, electricity for lighting and HEATING! Yes this little amazing Yurt had an electric heater in it, and boy did it heat that room up.

There was a skylight in the center of the roof, that opened by turning the rod, which probably comes in handy for ventilation in the summer. But it allowed me to lay on the bed and watch the stars in the night sky appear, and fall asleep to them, all warm and comfortable.

Buddy enjoyed the futon/sofa for the night, he actually didn't move all night from this spot, curled up in his favorite blanket:

I got to meet the local wildlife that night, as the raccoons had come to the porch to look for any bits of food. I was retuning from the toilet block, when I saw 3 of them run away from the door to the yurt. As I walked up the ramp I saw a little furry face appear at the side of the porch, then a second furry face appeared. I wanted to play with them as they were super cute! But I remembered being told they can carry diseases, such as rabies, so I kept my distance, laughing at the game of hide and seek I was now playing with the 3 of them. I stayed outside playing this game for a few minuets, then returned inside for the rest of the night.
We had a great nights sleep, and had cooked a good warm hearty dinner on the porch the night before, this was probably what had enticed the raccoons to visit, they must like spaghetti bolognaise as well. The tent and camping gear was all dry and we were able to carry on our return journey back to California, rested, full belly's, warm, dry and happy.

I would definitely recommend staying in a Yurt if you get the chance, its just fun! And at $20 a night, it costs the same as some campsites charge for a tent.

I hate camping in the rain... i can deal with cold, but wet sucks!

Same here, and when I say it rained all day, everyday I mean it...we made the most of the trip but there were times it was just miserable. But it lead to our Yurt discovery so not all bad :)

The yurt does look pretty awesome...

They are! I wanna stay in one again on our next trip to Oregon.

Hiya, just swinging by to let you know that this post made the Honorable Mentions list in today's Travel Digest!

Thank you! :)

Ive always wanted to try out a yurt! Was it cozy? Could you live in one long-term?

Yes its cozy! They are so cute!! The little heater actually got the place to hot and we had to keep turning it off. As for long term stays, I don't see why not. I mean it has electricity so you could plug in a small fridge to store food etc, well anything electric really. The porch is covered so easy to set up a camp stove out there and still have a roof over your head. They all come with the standard fire ring, BBQ and picnic table outside for the nicer days to.

You gotta try a Yurt! They are awesome!

Im in! Maybe we can do a Steemit meetup camping weekend in yurts!

I'm in! I suggested it to @derekrichardson yesterday at the meetup and he was up for it to!
Just need to find some closer than OR lol

we'd be down for a road trip, but a closer option works too :D

EXCELLENT!! (rubbing my hands together like Mr Burns from The Simpsons lol)
