HUGE GREAT WHITE SHARKS!! CAGE DIVE AT SHARK ALLEY!!

in #travel6 years ago (edited)

A place called Gansbaai (Shark Alley, Dyer Island) in South Africa has the densest population of Great White Sharks in the world. You have more chance of seeing White Sharks here than in Australia, New Zealand, California etc.

Certain times of the year they breach. We went at a time where there were plenty of Seals about, which meant the Great Whites were out in force.

In the video you will see the sharks start off small. What happens is they come along to see what's up, they can smell the Tuna head bait in the water. You have to watch out for the little sharks as they can take your fingers off. They can also fit into the cage if they wanted, so they are actually potentially more dangerous than the larger sharks.

The little shark disappears, this is the time to swap people out of the cage and get new people in, as there is a bigger shark close by. It's a hierarchy thing, so when the smaller shark goes, you know something bigger is about.

This happens throughout the dive until we get a HUUUUGE 5 metre Great White Shark at the end! I am on the boat filming, it was pretty intense.

When I was in the water we had a little 2 - 3metre, but I was lucky to be on the boat for the 5 metre shark as I was able to film.

I don't do great on boats out at sea so I was fighting off the sea sickness hard, we were out there for like 5 hours. When I was in the cage I was fine, but the moment back on that boat again its horrendous.

Those seals at Dyer Island STANK! haha but they were super cute.

I am glad I did the cage dive but I wouldn't do it again, mainly due to the sea sickness.

I'm pretty terrified of anything in the water that may be bigger than me, but the idea that I'd get in the water to then face off with something as big as a Great White is absolutely terrifying, heh.

Yeah it doesn't seem very clever does it haha. It was 10 years ago, and I was travelling and wanted to face a fear ;-)
I actually am really fond of sharks, I have surfed with them in Australia. They are not mindless killers like they are made out to be.

All I would be thinking is what if the boat sank

Yeah I did actually think that haha, I asked the skipper and he said the water is so cold you probably wouldn't be able to make it to shore anyway...what a lovely thought

just getting out there looked pretty choppy

Yeah thats the only downside, as soon as you come out of the harbour the water is rough, and when the boat set the anchor down it gets 10 times worse!

Ive been there, and it is a blast. Comment from the tour guide to the newly wedded couple before the trip was to the bride "do you have insurance?"

Also he mentioned that they use plastic cages , so as not to hurt the endangered species of shark, Lol this was a joke of course.
I looked at the welds on the cages that we climbed in, Made of Rebars and not very strong. All added to the experience, glad you enjoyed!!

Ah brilliant! Our guy was telling us that they use the birds to find out where the sharks are. They were throwing pieces of bread into the water and if the birds took the bread, we moved on to another spot. When the birds refused to take the bread from the surface, thats when they put the cage down. Pretty clever :-)
