Logarska dolina, bicycle ride

in #travel6 years ago (edited)

One of the typical postcard sceneries from Slovenia is a curvy road with green meadows and tall mountains in the background. This road is located in Logarska dolina.

Let's hit the road

I started from Ljubljana, headed north, via Kamnik, Podlom and Luče as my GPS suggested. From Podlom to Luče (č = ch), the road is narrow and not very fun to drive, but it's survivable. If you don't like narrow roads, the alternative is from Podlom to Radmilje, and it's probably better although longer (20 vs 40 km).

From Luče, you will head to Solčava. After Solčava there are 3 places you can visit: Robanov kot, for hiking, Logarska dolina and Panoramska cesta, mountain road with some of the greatest views. Currently, the road is in bad condition. It's partially asphalted but very ruined and partially macadam. Macadam is actually much better and smooth. Currently, it's possible to visit it even with a regular car (only one seriously problematic spot) and with a road bike as I did (relatively stupid idea, take some spare tyres with you).

Total travel time, Ljubljana - Logarska dolina = 1.5 hours. Entrance by car costs 7e. For a bicycle, it's free.

And we arrived

When I visited Logarska dolina for the first time, I had only a car. This time I decided not to make the same mistake again, so I took a bike.

As you can see on map, there is a circular road to Solčava. The eastern side is not particularly interesting, and the road is the macadam only, so I returned using the same route.

Optionally, you can take this road as well but only with a proper mountain bike with durable tyres.

After about 45 min of climbing, I've read that the road is closed, except for those who travel to the Church of holy spirit. Ok, never mind, I'll climb to the mountain house Planinski Dom Majerhold and see what's going on with the road. Fresh Cocta, Slovenian version of Coca-Cola, gave me some sugars I previously burned. If you decide to visit this mountain hut, they have a restaurant. I haven't tried their food, but the smell was promising.

Ok, the road is fine for a bicycle, so let's explore.

There are several "turistične kmetije" (tourist-friendly village houses) where you can find homemade food, drinks and in most cases very decent rooms. The rule of thumb is: further from the main road, lover the price. It's possible to find a really incredible value for money and most "kmeteeya"s have booking score around 9.5.

I spoke too much, let's enjoy the photos:

There are several more cool spots, but I don't want to spoil you the experience.

Back to the valley, 15 min of fast descent. What a joy. Don't forget to take some windproof clothing. It's chilly up there and very chilly during the descent. Don't be too concerned about the water, there are natural springs and kmeteeye.

Well deserved coffee at Plesnik. They also have some swimming pools, wellness and similar hedonistic stuff.

After the coffee break, it was time to visit the tallest Slovenian waterfall, Slap Rinka.

From one direction it looks like a giant heart, 100x100 meters!

This strange-looking hut is actually a little cafe, appropriately named "The Eagle's Nest".

From there, you can start climbing local peaks, but the day was ending and there was no time for me :(
Next time...

For the end:

  • Take a bicycle, or rent them (it's about 15-20 Eur/day)
  • Take a GF (your GF, don't "take" in the meaning of kidnapping, it's illegal)
  • Stay there for 3 days
  • 1 day for a bicycle ride, 1 for climbing, 1 to explore the surrounding valleys

What I couldn't tell you by words and photos:

  • sound of an eagle
  • beating of the heart that wants to jump out of the chest while you are climbing
  • sound of a small mountain creek
  • the smell of the forest

All those things, you need to experience by yourself.
