Fuerteventura, Canary Islands, sea, food and surf.

in #travel8 years ago (edited)

Hi guys, today I want to tell you about Fuerteventura and my holidays.
I apologize in advance for my English, I will make mistakes.

A little introduction

Fuerteventura is one of the Canary Islands, in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Africa, politically part of Spain. At 1,660 square kilometres (641 square miles), it is the second largest of the Canary Islands, after Tenerife.
It was declared a biosphere reserve by UNESCO in May 2009.
Its capital is Puerto del Rosario.
Fuerteventura is the oldest island in the Canary Islands dating back 20 million years to a volcanic eruption from the Canary hotspot.
The last volcanic activity in Fuerteventura was between 4,000 and 5,000 years ago.
The climate on Fuerteventura is pleasant throughout the year. The island is also often referred to as the island of eternal spring.
The sea adjusts the temperature making the hot Sahara winds blow away from the island.
The island's name in English translates as "strong fortune" or "strong wind".

Arrival and first impressions

As soon as I got off the plane I breathed a different air, hot, dry and clean, I do not know how to explain it but it is very pleasant.
I and my friend noticed that in Fuerteventura things get very quiet, people are also relaxed at work then equip yourself with patience. Take it easy!
a friend of ours who lives there gave us a lift, but do not worry about transportation, there are buses at all hours.
From the airport we went to Corralejo, a town north of the island known for its night life and entertainment for young people.
we rented a small apartment, via the internet, I recommend https://www.booking.com for savings and reliability.
To welcome us there was a cucaracha, a typical insect of the canary.

Beaches and outback

In Fuerteventura there are some beautiful beaches, they are heavenly and unspoiled. In every coastal city there is a beach but for the most beautiful and pristine beaches you have to move away a little from the towns.
The beaches are made of volcanic sand and clear but also can be made of black sand, beautiful and special.

Many roads are unpaved so the best choice is to rent a jeep obtain a map and leave.
Fuerteventura is a volcanic island and the landscapes reminiscent of Mars surface.

Food

In Fuerteventura there are many types of cuisine, there are Italian restaurants, English restaurants, of course Spanish restaurants, ect. In pubs you can eat fish and cips and drink beer at reasonable prices
I went many times in Spanish restaurants to sample the local cuisine and I recommend you order the "paellia Valenciana" which is a rice with fish, vegetables and spices, really good.

Then I recommend to order the fried shrimp and "papa arrugadas" that are little canary potatoes with very thin skin. They are eaten with the peel seasoned with hot sauces.

If you prefer to eat at home you can do shopping at the supermarket "Hyper Dino" which has very low prices and is well stocked.
The Canary Islands import most of the food, then certain foods will cost more, the fish is delicious and cheap.

Night life

Corallejo is a city with a good nightlife, there are many young people of all nationalities, mostly British, Italian and Spanish. There are many pubs, disco pubs that stay open until late at night.

I recommend you try the Canarian rum and in particular the "Ron Miel" rum to which honey is added.

Surf

Fuerteventura is the European mecca for surfers, is located at the same latitude of Florida and Mexico, which is accompanied by terms of climate and beauty of the waves.
Nice weather and consistent waves all year round, but the best time is from October to March.
Here are the beaches of the Canary Islands more lengthy and less crowded.
In this site you will find all the best beaches for surfing: http://www.surfing-waves.com/atlas/europe/canary_islands/fuerteventura.html

With friends we were able to go and visit a laboratory to make surfboards.

The owner, Wenzel, showed us how to make a surfboard, watch the video below.
Wenzel speaks italian, there are subtitles in Italian that can be automatically translated by clicking on settings.
