Hanging out at Trolltunga, the Troll's Tongue

Trolltunga is one of the iconic hikes of Norway. But it is not an easy one. The 23 km round trip includes two steep ascents/descents and takes about 10 hours. The payoff, however, is quite spectacular.

The tongue itself sits at about 1100 meters above sea level, and about 700 meters above the mountain lake below. Like the hike at Preikestolen, it's a great place to live on the edge!

The hiking season in Norway is rather short, especially when it concerns inland mountain areas like Trolltunga. Officially, it closes in mid-September to solo hikers and to all hikers in mid-October. There are very good reasons for this. This trip was in the second half of September and turned out to be decent weather and, thus, a horde of tourists, but was still plenty epic enough to be turned into Episode 3 our of Adventure Every Day Web series, airing tomorrow.

This is a typical touristy thing to do at Trolltunga.

We were back about a month after this, and the hike was a whole different story. Absolutely treacherous weather, massive wind, and not a single other tourist on top. A dangerous situation indeed. That will come next week in Episode 4, so stay tuned!
