Hanging out at Preikestolen, the Pulpit Rock

About 10,000 years ago, the earth was emerging from the most recent period of glaciation. At that time, Norway was covered in ice, but the ice was retreating. It dragged and scraped it’s way across the rocks, thawed and froze time and time again, and eventually left behind some of the most incredible landscapes to be found on this planet: the Norwegian fjords.

Norway’s countless fjords stretch inland from the sea and cover large swaths of the western part of the country. Some of them reach quite a ways inland, up to a couple hundred kilometers from the outer coast. Others are quite short, merely fingers extending from a main artery. All of them are beautiful. One need not travel to any particular place along the fjords to witness stunning natural beauty, for it exists at every turn. Yet there still are places that afford a certain extra degree of spectacle, and Preikestolen is one of those places.

Preikestolen, or the Pulpit Rock by it’s English name, is a square-shaped protrusion extending 600 meters, almost 2000 feet, above the tranquil Lysefjord below. The freeze-thaw cycles millennia ago cut sharply into the rock, and the glaciers carried away large pieces as they receded. But Preikestolen stands strong to this day.
