The first thing on my sight when I just arrived in Fukuoka city was this colorful decoration which was installed all over the city.

I know most of the major festivals or big events in Japan, but this colorful decoration was unfamiliar to me. So I started researching about it.

And I found out that there is Fukuoka local festival from July 1 to 15 every year centered on Kushida Shinto.

From July 1, when the event begins, a large ornamental called "Gazariyama" installed everywhere.

‘Hakata Gion Yamakasa’. is the largest festival in the Fukuoka area, and one of Japan's major intangible folk cultural assets. The festival is famous for the Kakiyama, that weigh around one ton and are carried around the city as an act of float-racing.

It has been going on for over 770 years since it started in 1241. At that time there was an epidemic spreading around during the summer because of the hot and humid weather.

When there was pestilence in the Hakata area in 1241, Shoichi, who was studied in the Song Dynasty, He prayed for comforted the souls of the lonely people who had died without a relative with a large palanquin, and defeated the pestilence.

Traditionally, women can not participate in Hakata Gion Yamakasa, and only men can carry the palanquin. These days, the people who are carrying the palanquin mainly men, so Hakata Gion Yamakasa is also called "the men's festival".

I was lucky this time so I could see the palanquin is coming in front of Hakata Station.

Around 200 men were running with the shouting “Oi-sat”! Oi-sat! Or “Ot-syoi”, “Ot-syoi” and kept spraying water continuously to each other.

There were men of various ages who are dressed in unique outfits, especially it was so cute to see young children’s dressed up and ran with their father or grandfather.

Also, they were selling cute festival memorabilia at department stores. Isn't it so cute? :)

I feel amazied of the Yamakasa festival because it’s been over than 770 years from the start, but the tradition still continues, and the local people voluntarily participating in the local festival.

The event may have already ended yesterday but I think I was lucky to have a chance to see this!! If I can have chance I’d love to see this festival again

후카오카에서 가장 큰 축제 '하카타 기온 야마카사'

얼마전 다녀온 후쿠오카에 도착해서 가장 먼저 눈에 띄었던것이 바로 시내 곳곳에 설치되어 있는 이 호화스러운 장식들이었어요. 저도 일본의 주요 명절이나 큰 행사들은 대부분 알고 있는 편인데 이렇게 화려한 장식의 행사는 생소한거 같아 바로 리서치에 들어갔죠!!

알고보니 일본 후쿠오카에서 매년 7월 1일부터 15일까지 구시다신사를 중심으로 펼쳐지는 민속 축제가 있다고 합니다. 행사가 시작되는 7월 1일부터 형형색색의 장식인 가자리야마라고 하는 대형 장식품이 후쿠오카 곳곳에 설치 된다고 해요.

후쿠오카 지역 최대의 축제이자 일본의 주요무형민속문화재인 이 행사의 정확한 명칭은 하카타 기온 야마카사라고 하는데요, 무려 1241년에 처음 시작한 이래 770년 넘게 이어져오고 있다고 합니다. 당시 일본에서는 덥고 습한 여름에 역병이 발생하는 일이 잦았는데, 1241년 하카타 지역에 역병이 크게 돌았을 때 송나라에 유학을 다녀온 쇼이치(聖一) 국사가 가마를 타고서 길에 감로수를 뿌리며 역병이 물러가기를 기도하고, 연고자 없이 사망한 외로운 이들의 넋을 위로하며 이를 물리쳤다고 합니다.

그가 탄 커다란 가마를 서민들이 짊어지고 거리를 돈 것이 하카타 기온 야마카사의 기원이 되었다고 하네요. 전통적으로 하카타 기온 야마카사에는 여자들은 참가할 수 없으며 남자들만 가마를 멜 수 있었습니다. 오늘날에도 가키테들은 주로 남자들이어서 하카타 기온 야마카사는 “남자들의 마츠리”라고도 불립니다.

저는 이번에 운이 좋아 하카타역앞에서 가마가 들어오는 장면을 볼 수 있었어요. 200명쯤 되는 남성들이 우렁찬 목소리로 오이삿! 오이삿! 혹은 옷쇼이! 옷쇼이! 소리를 지르며 어디선가 달려오더라구요, 이때 가마를 메고 있는 사람들에게는 계속해서 물을 뿌려주던데, 의미가 있는 것인지 아님 더워서 물을 계속 뿌려주는것인지는 모르겠네요^^;; 사람들이 메고 있는 가마가 무려 1톤이나 나간다고 하네요!! 정말 대단하죠~?

엉덩이를 내놓은 독특한 복장을 하고 있는 다양한 연령대의 남성들이 참가를 했는데요, 그중에서도 특히 어린 아이들이 의상을 입고 뛰어디나는게 어찌나 귀엽던지요>_< 아버지나 할아버지와 함께 참여하는 것일텐데 아이들에게 평생 잊지 못할 추억이 될거 같았습니다. 또한 백화점 지하등에서 팔고 있던 행사 상품들도 너무 귀여웠어요~^^

이렇게 야마카사는 전통을 직접 제눈으로 보면서 느낀점은 770년이라는 시간이 흘렀음에도 그 전통이 아직까지도 이어지고 있다는 사실에 정말 놀라웠고, 또한 지역주민들이 자발적으로 참여하면서 만들어가는 지역 축제가 너무 부럽더라구요~^^
행사는 어제로 이미 끝났겠지만 직접 볼 수 있는 기회가 온것이 너무 행운이였던거 같아요 다음에 기회가 된다면 또 보고싶네요!!
