WHAT LANGUAGE IS THIS? #translation
After my Dad passed away, I came across this prayer book. So I carefully wrapped it up and stored it away knowing one day, I would do the research needed to know where this came from. So I am asking the @steemit community for any feedback you can give as far as the LANGUAGE in this old and beautiful prayer book.
My Dad always said he was of RUSSIAN descent, that his Dad came to America when he was a toddler.
I found this card in the book and for all I know the signature maybe one of my great-grandfather or great grandmother or some other GREAT relative, ALL my relatives are great at something (just kidding)
So my fellow steemians, what do you think? Is it written in Russian? If anyone knows give me a shout out and help me begin my journey to trace this little prayer book back to the hands that held it.
Steem on my friends ! @farm-mom
Looks like Pit Latin to me. I hope someone out there responds. It would be really cool to know where it came from.
Do you mean pig Latin?
It looks like old russian - Russian Bible.
Really? that's what I thought to, hope someone picks this up that can tell WHAT LANGUAGE ???
I checked the internet about Russian language and following links about its history.
From the few pages you posted, it is really hard to understand the specific language for a non-specialist of those languages. But from what I understood, the text is written in Early Cyrillic alphabet that is closer to Russian than to other Slavonic languages. I believe it is the Church Slavonic language - Standard (Russian) variant and not the older Old Church Slavonic.
The difference can be seen in text. For example, Old Church Slavonic has more vowels and other nuances, like in this picture and that text is not readable by me. But in this book letters are simpler, has all the letters from Early Cyrillic alphabet and at the same time text can be read by a modern russian language speaker.
Hey, thanks so much, going to take time to read through what you sent, but thanks @scorer much appreciated @farm-mom
If you have the cover of that book with the title and can post it, then it is easier to find out what kind of prayer book it is and even get the scanned version of it on the internet.
OK thanks for info, been doing some reading this morning and it does appear to be the Church Slavonic language but not sure check this out
Nice. Now we know its title. 👍
Could not find much information about it. At least we know that the same book can be found in Ukraine.

oh weee thanks @scorer gotta a lot to do but you have been so helpful thank you
That is fascinating! It will be interesting to see if you can find out which ancestor it might have belonged to.
No, that is too much to ask for. 😂 I just understand a bit in Russian and can find something easier than a non speaker.
Congratulations @farm-mom!
You raised your level and are now a Minnow!
