It is bicycle safety week in Toronto...

The second and third death as result of bicycle accidents in Toronto happened on June 12, 2018. One person died in hospital from accident a month ago and another same day as the accident happened. It has stirred up all these calls for Driver responsibility and lower speed limit.

Among these noises I would like to point out.

  1. Humans makes mistakes cyclist or driver can make mistake on their judgment. Lower speed limit call by urban planner or Mayor saying drivers need to pay more attention will most likely change nothing.
  2. Toronto City Council that put these bike lanes in and let cyclists on without doing much to educate and verify if cyclists are capable and know the rules of the road.
  3. Driver education / test need more content on how to deal with surprise from bikes.
  4. There are great rule abiding cyclists and a group of low grade rule breaking cyclists and that need to be addressed.

City council how about putting a bicycle tax on all bicycle related sales / service and use the fund to build more bike lanes, educate cyclists, license them and enforce the rules so it is safer for cyclists and pedestrians. While at it how about an umbrella insurance fund for all claims from hit and run cyclists.
