Food For Thought: All Of These New Tokens Feel Counterproductive

in #tokens6 years ago (edited)

Do we really need to keep making and celebrating new tokens when they don't seem to solve larger issues and more critical needs?

It's fun to be creative and try to create your own mini-market amongst a relatively small user base, but it feels like we're further diluting our attention from the real goal here. It feels like we're finding ways to feel successful when we're actually very far behind in the real game.

We need to attract MILLIONS of new Steem adopters who value the Steem token and use it globally, not more distracting types of Pode. It's too early for this. We need to appreciate and encourage every new adopter we can and help them attract more. Marketing is everything!

We need to make the Steem blockchain better, not add a bunch of unnecessary weight to slow us down.

Creating tokens is a great concept and wonderful for the long run, but it's toooooo soooooon.

Let's consider refocusing on efforts to grow and spread the word of Steem globally, while building ON the chain, not around it... shall we?

just like any other thing in the world! this needs time to settle!
the skeleton gotta get built first then we can put up the other functions on it! :) <3

While I think that most are nonsense, they do serve an educational purpose and help people understand what is possible. At some point, the crap ones will drop away and the solution will concentrate. For now, people are playing with possibility.

Yes, we need millions of users but the Blockchain isn't quite ready for them. Soon it will be however as it will be able to scale more effectively and efficiently under load which has to be sorted before they arrive.

When it comes to tokenisation, what might be interesting with all of these is that there will likely be a way to collect them across apps and covert them to Steem through the markets. This could mean that apps could both empower users in their own way and still put pressure on the demand for steem.

Good points. I was prompted to write this afters sitting in on a few MSP Waves shows where it's celebrated as such a great new thing with a bright future, but I think it's mainly spinning our wheels and creating a sense of accomplishment that is not quite directed in the right place at the moment. However, I'm not a developer and should keep my mouth shut without being able to build on this chain. It's cool and a proactive witness contribution, but just more of a bells and whistles thing instead of addressing a more critical need.

You should definitely keep your mouth open but remember there are many sides to it. The start of the internet was not 3D gaming :) When it comes to onboarding and retention, all of these activities are going to add up to create a host of compelling usecases for steem and blockchain as a whole.

What is your idea to spread the word of steem globally?

I'm not on Twitter or Instagram, YouTube, and rarely on Facebook, so I tell people about it all the time in person as my best outreach. Alone, that's only a small ripple. However, if thousands of us are telling one person a day globally, and trying to see them through the sign-up process/post sign-up support, I think it'd be far more effective than people building so-so stuff for the same small pool of current users, and talking in circles about how cool the new tokens are/what they can be worth one day.

People posting about how great Steem is alllll over YouTube would be very helpful. A lot of videos I've seen are outdated or by people who don't present it correctly. YouTube influencers promoting Steem would be awesome if we could connect with them, get them online here, and leverage their influence/popularity to recommend the Steem bockchain for social media and crypto purposes.

It is bizarre isn't it - they don't fit well with my decluttering ethos either, and create FOMO, especially for new users who maybe can't afford to diversify?
