Octopuses have three hearts -TIL

in #til8 years ago (edited)

Octopus is one of the "old" and most impressive creatures on the planet. His numerous arms made it become the subject of mysterious legends. Their brain is composed on average of 500 million neurons, while the human brain contains about 100 billion neurons. Despite the walnut size of the brain , octopuses are the smartest invertebrates in the world.

It has been shown that these marine animals have both short-term memory and long term, they are able to escape from the aquarium, mazes and sneak unseen aboard boats! What is astounding is that the eyes maintain a constant orientation, regardless of the body position.

To escape from predators, the octopus produces an 'ink' and throws it, gaining time to flee. This ink can have 3 colors: black, red or brown and it's composed of melanin. Octopuses have an amazing capacity to slip through the smallest holes, while changing their body shape. The only solid portion of octopus body composition is the "skull" cartilage.

Copycat octopus

It is a species that can take the form of many animals in a very short time. It can disguise in a snake, a bream fish, a seahorse, a gurnard or even in a starfish!

All octopuses are venomous, but only blue-ringed octopus has the ability to kill a man.

Octopuses have three hearts

The first two are engaged to exclusively carry blood to the gills, while the third is to pump blood throughout the body. The common octopus has around 240 cuppings on each arm. In addition, three-fifths of an octopus neurons are not in the brain, they are in his arms. It's like each arm has its own brain. The approximately 1,600 cups not only have a touch role, but it also has a smell role too. It helps them to detect odors.

Males use one of his arms as the reproductive organ. During fertilization, it breaks but, until the next breeding season it grows back. Regardless of gender, octopuses live three to five years, which limits their knowledge.

Scientists believe that if the average life would be much higher, they would become the dominant force on earth intelligence.
