TIL: Why CORN Comes Out WHOLE When You POOP…

in #til9 years ago

Today I learned…

That the corn that comes out when you poop.., is not actually whole (we'll get that in a minute)…

corn poop

Most people I know love corn… Corn on the cob, BBQ corn, corn soup (chowder), corn muffins and even corn flakes. And why not.., it's delicious. We put it in taco salad's -- I myself, make a lentil salad with corn.., and of course -- we pop it!

Unfortunately, these days 94% of the corn in the U.S. is Genetically Modified… And is being distributed to the unsuspecting public (un-labeled). Actually, up to 75% (maybe more by now) of the food sitting on the shelves, at the typical U.S. grocery store, contains some genetically modified ingredients… And, with our ever growing dependence on high fructose corn syrup, the production GM corn has sky-rocketed!

But we are here to talk about the corn that comes out
whole when we poop…

Today I learned…

The corn that comes out whole when we poop -- is not actually whole…

Think about it… How could it be whole, you chewed it up, right..? So how could it be whole?

IT'S NOT WHOLE!

The outer shell of corn, is made of cellulose.., which is hard for the body to digest. Even after being chewed on, that shell can hold it's form… Put the inside of the corn, the yummy part.., we do actually absorb and digest.

So then how come I see whole corn in my poop..?

What you are actually seeing is -- little poop filled cellulose corn bags. That's right, that whole corn you thought you were seeing, is the hard to digest cellulose outer shell of the corn.., filled with poop!

Sorry for the rather "distasteful / graphic" description and imagery…
But the truth had to be told -- Bon appetit :))

hmmm.., I've got a craving for some corn, now...

P.S., I always assumed it was a whole piece of undigested corn -- I had no idea, what it actually was...

I always thought it was a strong sense of individuality and refusal to conform.

The biology nerd in me thoroughly enjoyed this! Mielies(corn) are a staple here in SA during the Summer braai(barbeque) season. my mom is actually making some mielie bread right now. It will give me great joy to go relay this information to her. Great post XD

(hahhahaha) Always good dinner conversation...

One of your more shitty topics, one on a crapped out subject. True to form you piled it up and flushed the information into us in a funny, corny manner and I am still laughing. So, what poop are planning next?

Trust me... There's a lot more poop writing coming :))

I love #poop stories. I definitely needed the laugh today! Thanks :D

I got plenty of them... (hahahaha)!
Cheers, @merej99

AWESOME! Thanks for answering one of those "unasked questions." ;)

Now I'll reward you with an "asked question," one perhaps you'll jump at writing another great post about:

What is the mechanism that results in the distinctly strong smell of my urine after I've eaten asparagus?

I vaguely recall reading about that somewhere... Here's a corollary/bonus question:

Might it be possible that whatever the "asparagus effect" is could be useful for something/anything? Perhaps adjunct to treating a UTI? Or...?

@macksby, Thank You for another great post! ;)

@creatr

You have changed my life in 2 ways with this post:

  1. You solved a long-standing mystery.
  2. You have effectively altered nearly every evacuation experience I may have in the future. lol
