RE: Mormon Couple Claim They’re ‘Not Homophobic’ Despite Believing Gay Sex Is a Sin 🏳️_🌈

in #threespeak7 years ago

To consider someone's behavior as a sin does not translate to disliking the person or a prejudice. Again, if I think having a beer or dancing is a Sin, I would choose to not participate in having a beer or dancing, but it does not imply judgement of the person, rather a behavior.

I'm pretty sure we all know and love some people that do things we choose not to do.

Sort:

In any case, I don't think being homosexual is immoral or a sin and I also believe for many it is absolutely not a choice.

I re-read your initial comment and I understand now that you can see things from the Mormon's perspective but that you don't agree with their perspective.

That's good... can you help me see things from your perspective? @whatsup

What is your moral compass?

  • How do you personally determine what is moral and immoral? @whatsup

Which definition of the word Sin do you use?

AND..

  1. How do you personally determine what is a "sin" and what is not?

  2. The word sin comes with a lot of baggage since there are probably things that most people consider "sins" that you don't - would it be better to abandon the word sin and use other words like ignorance, addiction, poor judgement, etc.? Why or why not?

No question you are correct when you say that the word Sin holds baggage.

I view it as things people do that can harm their enjoyment of life. When I moved away from a Catholic upbringing I used to like to say, we are punished BY our sins, not for our Sins. Meaning the punishment comes from inside (results, feelings), not outside. (God)

Having too many sexual partners "could" result in drama and hurt feelings, depending on the circumstances. Alcohol and Drugs could result in not being able to focus on important things and can hurt your health, make you feel sick, drunk, mind altered etc.

Lying and Stealing hurt others...

The title of your post implies that a Mormon can not think that homosexuality is a sin without being homophobic, I'm saying I know and love many Christians including Mormons and it is a huge assumption. I've told you why twice.

Personally, I try not to judge others religious or not based on beliefs and different values. That doesn't mean I choose to emulate the behavior of those people.

Don't hurt other people or yourself... Wise words, not mine.

When a person uses the word "Sin" it implies something that goes against "Divine Law" but I think you are talking more about people making mistakes that break natural laws.

I understand though that you might have a different view now compared to when you first left Catholicism.

I realize my mistake now and I probably would have noticed it sooner if we were talking in person. Sometimes when I read text I read what I think I am reading instead of what is actually written.

Thank you for correcting us.. I cannot speak for the rest of @atheistrepublic or the speakers in the video but I agree with you.

P.S. I upvoted your comment with 100% voting strength for maximum visibility. If you or anyone else offers constructive criticism that proves any of us wrong, I will upvote it for great visibility 👍

I think I already told you but in case I didn't, I am a volunteer managing @atheistrepublic's Steem account so my views, in some cases, are different from @arminnavabi's and the rest of the team in this video.

But I think your ideas are actually very much related to the first #SteemExclusive video that @arminnavabi made for @atheistrepublic:

STEEM EXCLUSIVE | Why Do Atheists Hate?
https://steemit.com/threespeak/@atheistrepublic/xqmqfonr

In addition to that, I got word last week that @atheistrepublic is providing commentary on other people's news articles in each of these news videos so the title and description is the title and description of the news article they are commenting on, and does not necessarily represent the views of @arminnavabi, the Team in the video or anyone on @atheistrepublic.

The things each person says in each video is what represents their individual views, NOT the title and NOT the description of the news article they are covering.

Oh, thanks for letting me know. I thought the conversation was interesting.

I don't mind unpopular opinions and discussion of unpopular discussions.
