RE: Chop, carry and never repeat
I am pondering a question: how come after more than three years, there seems to be nothing better than steem in the "permissionless blockchain" domain? I mean yes, bitcoin is still the King at what it does (providing an alternative to the unbalanced financial system) and ethereum is still everyone's favorite sandbox ... And then there are various copycats that try to be "better bitcoins" or "better ethereums". But to my eyes, there is only one really good blockchain which stands out and which offers something unique, and that is steem.
How come, despite all the bumbling along and the weak leadership we've seen here during the past 3 years, nobody stole steem's crown? I think we are still in a "crypto bubble" where everybody else is somehow "lost in the dark". They focus on the wrong things, they forget to "chop wood, carry water".
Regardless of changes in cryptoeconomics, the "chop wood, carry water" of steem it catering to users' needs, whether
- offering a platform for blogging which not just free, but which can also generate revenue
- offering a free platform for displaying art for artists who find it hard to get visibility
- offering a free platform for games
- etc.
Steem has never been really free. because contrary to the centralized social media platforms where the owners pay for expenses and reap the benefits, on the decentralized platform which Steem is the users are also the owners and they share the expenses by investing in SP and also the benefits by earning SP.

At a global level you are right, but then nothing obliges you to invest in SP, there are quite a number of people who started from scratch and earned their SP (not my case, but ...)
Yes, I have to clarify my thought a bit. It's totally possible to earn something on Steem without ever investing a penny of your own money. The question is would that be enough to build a strong foundation here? To become an orca, for example? A fat dolphin, certainly but probably not an orca unless... one starts from scratch in these newer tribes, like palnet or neoxian etc. I hope you will become an orca before the end of this year or sooner.
I made it all the way to here and most of it has come through Steem earning and trading earnings back and forth to earn more Steem. I wouldn't say this is commonly possible though.
However, I do think that it is possible to make it significant if recognizing how little steem in circulation there will be in the future. If there were 10 million users in 15 years from now and the Seem was spread evenly, the most anyone could have is 650 Steem.
It suggests there is no demand for it, and 'the unique selling point' has no value to the majority of people. (as the lack of others you mention, indicates - and the falling value/volume/ranking of steem, confirms..)
I have asked this question a lot and wonder if it is that perhaps, there is just no way to make the concept work, yet it is kind of working here and could work much better. I think at some point, people will recognize Steem as something quite revolutionary - and hopefully Steem can keep its crown when that happens.
